MR. BALDWIN'S SPEECH TO 70,000.
"DON'T WORK AT A LOSS."
"I AM NO WIZARD.".
LONDON, May 29th. Mr. Baldwin, the Prime Minister, addressed a gathering of more than 70.000 people in the grounds of Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire, where he and Mrs. Baldwin had
spent the week-end, as the guests of the Duke and Duchess of Portland. He claimed that the record of the Government proved that they had not only fulfilled their pledges, but had also performed far more than they promised; and he said that the only way to prosperity was by facing the hard economic facts.
A 19-Months Campaign, Mr. Baldwin said:

The last barriers of political privilege are to-day falling down. The whole adult population of the United Kingdom is enfranchised The dominions over-seas, whom we have aursed from"infancy, are come
of age.
We know little yet of the demands which the newly onfranchised millions will make, but we do kn this: that it is desirable that the should feel that it is their primary duty to vote; that they should vote intelligently; that they should keep a vigilant eye upon the character of those men whom they choose for their representatives and for the Government, and that they should hold them responsible for their actions in Parliament.

The pageant then showed some thing of the visit of Queen Elizabeth to Bassetbury Manor. Wycombe on her return from Oxford in 1568. A school mistress, Miss Dessinn, made a splendid and noble figure of the Queen, being. ft. in. in height. Arriving under a canopy borne by mobles, and with her yeomen of the guard in atten- dance, the Queer, after a speech, was gracious enough to witness a display of madrigals and danoES.
