CANDOUR ABOUT HER' MANY | Athens.
LOVERS; ..
"My life" By Isadora Duncan, which has recently been published, is an enormously interesting book and probably the frankest and most picturesque autobiography ever written by a woman.
Its author, the famous dancer who was killed in a motoring ac- cident in the south of France last year, knew that she had an en- thralling story to tell. My life," she wrote, has been more interest: ing than any novel and more adven- turous than any cinema, and, if really well written, would be an epoch-making recital." Her candour rings true; in this book is no tience or compromise.
She was glad, she says, that she was young in a day when prople were not so self-conscious as they are now; when they were not sucht haters of life and pleasure." She had many lovers.
She was born in San Francisco, by the aca, and by the sea all the great events of her life, she says, took place. She drew the earliest inspiration for her dancing from the waves. Walking by the sen 211 Italy, her greatest friend; the famous actress Eleanora Duse, said to her, after the death of her two children in a motoring accident in Paris:
her right ear was seriously injured.
She told a reporter that while she was holding the dog for an old man who bad charge of it' the
animal sprang at her without warn- ing, but became quiet immediately the old man returned.
Back in Paris, she found herself again with a depleted banking ac count, owing to the incessant drain of her school Enter then Löhen. grin, a millionaire of lavish genero- sity with a yacht. He had a house in Devonshire, where she stayed, finding English country life istoler ably dull. She sent for a pianist. He enme he was a man who gave her a sense of absolute physical revulsion whenever she looked at HONG KONG METEOROLOGIQAL him. "Whenever he played for me I placed a screen about him, saying:
**You are so unspeakably offen- aive to me that I cannot bear to would wean and protest his adora look at you."
"The poor pianist tion for her. Soon afterwards she realised that she loved him.
D'Annunzio's Goldfish. But the Italian poet D'Annunzio she resisted:
D'Annunzio said to me: "Every night I am coming to your room at 12 o'clock. I have conquered all the women in the world. but
I have yet to conquer Isadora."
And every night te came to my room at 12 o'clock. And I said to myself: I am just going to be unique. I am going to be the only woman in the world to resist D'Annunzio."
He had a goldfish on which he lavished an absurd affection. When he went to Italy he left it in charge of a maltre d'hôtel ja Paris, who thus described its end:
He kept telegraphing: How Isadora, don't, don't seek hapis my beloved Adolphus 1" One.. piness again. You have on your brow the mark of the great un- happy ones of the earth. Do not tempt fate again.
Search For A Dance.
The Duncans were desperately poor, and when she was ten Isadora left school to teach dancing to girls of her own age and younger. The family moved to Chicago, where she danced for one maunger after another, but was always told:
It's very lovely, but not for the theatre." Eventually the Duncans sailed in a cattle boat for England, and in London Isadora met Mrs. Patrick Campbell, who gave her in- troductions. She danced in draw. ing-rounds during the season, and met the painter Watts, Andrew Lang. Ellen Terry, and King Edward (then Prince of Wales), who described her as a Gains borough beauty,
From London she went.. to Paris, where she met more cele- brities, and spent long hours in the libraries seeking in books the dance that should be the perfect expres sion of the human spirit.
From Berlin she went to Budapest, where she danced," im- proving The Blue Danube" of Strauss. That evening there was in the audience, applauding rap- türously, A young Hungarian, whe "was to transform the chaste nymph that I was into a wild and careless bacchante."

Back once more in Germany, she spent some months in a state of nervous prostration. But at Abbazia the Grand Duke Ferdinand saw her and invited her to stay in his villa. While there she inaugurated a bathing costume of erêpe de Chine, low-necked, with shoulder straps, and skirts above the knees. As the customs then was to enter the water swathed from head to foot in voluminous black folds, this created a sensation.
No country held her for long. After a visit to Florence she took Berlin by storm and then went to Venice:
Venice did not yield me its secret and its loveliness until years after, when I was there with a slight, olive-skinned, dark- eyed lover. Then for the first time I Telt the sorcery of Venetian- charms..
