SHARP REPLY TO PRESS CRITICISM.

a sharp reply to criticisms made by a Penang newspaper, and an admission that he is un- popular in Malaya owing to his comparisons between British and Detch planters, were features-of the last speech made by the Rt. Hon. Mr. W. G. A. Ormsby-Gore, Under Secretary for the Colonies, before leaving Penang by the Malua for Colombo.

The occasion Was dinner given by the Penang Chinese. Chamber of Commerce in honour of Mr. Ormsby-Gare, who dealt in his speech with various state ments made in a leading article. in the Straits Echo.

In the course of his speech Mr. Ormsby-Gore referred to the lead. ing article in the Straits Echo, And quoted the passage: The Colonial Under-Secretary seems to have found little time for anything else bat education and rubber grow- ing' Mr. Ormsby-Gore, admitted that it was quite true that he de- voted some time to the problems of education which are "not only peculiar to the land, but also to the whole world and always diff. cult. He had also given his at tention to the premier agricultural industry.

MEMORIES OF RED ROSE" ADVENTURE.

Mrs. Keith Miller, who flew from London to Australia with Capt. Lancaster in a light aeroplane, the Red Rose, has some interesting things to say about, the light in an article in an Australian paper,

This air journey to Australia was, Capt. Lancaster's.iden, she writes. Ever since the war days in France he had dreamed of the time when he would hop off in London and land in Melbourne, He had kept the idea at the back of his mind, but always it was a solo fight for which he wanted money. The possibility of a passenger never entered into the scheme of things. Five months before I left Croydon in the Red Nore, Capt. Lancaster told me of his desire.

As soon as I heard the scheme I was interested. I put all the mangy I possessed into it, and when we were stuck and, found we couldn' raise enough money for the machine, Capt. Lancaster's mother came to the rescue and helped us through. We named the machine The Red Ruse after her, as she was known as Sister Red Rose, in a charitable mission.

It is perhaps a pity," again quoted Mr. Ormsby-Gore, that he has not been able to consider ways and means for encouraging sonie of the other tropical products for the production of which this coun- try is well suited. It has been amply proved that oil palms can be grown very profitably here, and there is already a considerable amount of planting in progress. Oil palms are not the only product that could be grown profitably in this country but the prospective grower gets little encouragement." What Mr. Ormsby-Gore Knows. Without being conceited, said the speaker, he was in a better position than any writer in the Straits Echo to talk on the subject of oil palms and the like. He had pro-hand. hably seen more thousands than the Editor had seen units; he had

written and knew more about the

topic than probably anyone in the

room.

Again, that much useful work of a scientific character has been accomplished in the Dutch Colonies must be admitted, but we refuse for one moment to believe that the rubber planting industry in the Dutch East Indies is in any way more advanced than it is here."

Mr. Ormsby-Gore said be had heen too long trained in scientific research and possessed too close a knowledge of chemistry to be de- ceived. He was not informed by the Dutch, but had carried his in-

vestigations on his own authority

and observations.

up,

*Eat Up Cash." Millionaires, who seem to find it difficult to spend their

money wisely, should remember airmen occasionally. Flights simply eat up cash, and it is not only for the purchase of the machine that funds are required. There are thousands of things to be paid for. We had to leave a deposit for cables: we spent large sums on maps; there were passports, and flying kit to be paid for. We have curious people to thank for help. Burberry's made our flying kit, and gave us 50 per cent, reduction. Sir Sidney Kidman and Mr. Clive Baillies, and Mr. Nevin Tait each gave us a helping

Here's another thing. I was r ranging for my trunks to be sent on after I left, and went on to Pick- ford's Travel Agency to see about

it.

Mis L. E. Armstrong, of Sydney, became very interested, and it was no doubt owing to her good word that the firm gave us monetary help. There seemed sucb a terrible lot of organization to do that I didn't think about my own flying luggage until quite late in the party, and I was faced with the problem of trying to keep down weight, and yet have all necessities with me in the aeroplane.
