The general cargo re- turns for both Hong Kong and through ports were very good, and showed a heavy increase over the previous day's figures which were

low.

Nine vessels carried 90,790 to of cargo for through ports, of which four British vessels contributed 8,904 tons. The ss. Li Shui, the Chinese master of the Japanese motor-schooner Hou Fei Maru who was Saed 810 on Tuesday morning by Comdr. J. B. Newill, D.8.0., for attempting to leave the port of the Colony with ous a clearance permit; was again before the Magistrate on two fur- ther charges The defendant was charged with attempting to leave the Harbour carrying 30 passengers | DELTA" other than cargo. He was stopped "RANEURA " as Fu Tau Mun Pass, the same day *** MIRZAPORE" that he had been fined $10. HeNOVARA" was also charged with making a falso clearance declaration by say ing that he was only carrying cargo when actually he was taking passen gers as well. Sub-Inspector Mass was in charge of the case, and the “NALDERA

"MOREA' his boat, were not passengers but his relations and the owners of the cargo which he was also carrying. They paid no fare, but were charged $1 each for food expenses. He was taking them to Taku (Formosa):

The Magistrate asked why the defendant had not mentioned that he was carrying these people when be made out his clearance form; the defendant replied that as they were relatives and owners of the cargo be did not think it was necessary.

The Magistrate agreed to dismiss the second charge, but imposed. a heavy fine of 860 on the first charge with an alternative of one month's hard labour.
