Some radical changes have been
made in the proposed boycott against the Japanese goods in Can- ton. Contrary to the 12th rules of the Committee on Severance of Economic relations with Japan **- promulgated sometime ago and re- ported in the Daily Press, there will be neither search nor sealing up of Japanese goods in the city, Moreover, there will be no pickets to molest Japanese goods either coming in or already in the city. The boycott, however, is to be con- tinued but it is going to be valun- tary, each person taking upon him..
In the Canton vernacular Press reports have appeared that Dr. Chao-Hais Chu, Commissioner for Foreign Affairs of Kwangtung, had| been asked to succeed General Hwang Fu as Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Nationalist Govern ment at Nanking. But the Canton Foreign Commisaloner, though ade quately qualified for the post by his years of diplomatic experience and great ability will not accept the offer. The Colonial Secretary replied on May 18th as follows:-
"The Postmaster-General points out that, if the full facilities asked for were provided, it would involve retaining a large propor tion of his staff (both shore staff and floating staff) on duty until 9 or 9 o'clock, at night almost daily as it is an almost daily oc- currence for some steamer to clear in the early morning with mails.
"He does not think this could be "justiñed by the actual traffic in many cases and suggests that, in any case, it would suffice to allow up to 6 p.m. to close the mails.
"He proposes accordingly to arrange for an extension of time ap to 6 p.m. in the case of the more important mails for Shang- hai and London and to observe to what extent the public make use of the increased facilities..."
"This extension could not be made to apply to registered letters or to parcels, in respect of which the time for closing would remain as at present; that is to say, in the case of a mail now advertised to close at p.m. and hencefor ward to be closed at 0"p.m. the time for registered letters ör parcels would continue to be 4.45 p,m,

It is understood that most of the Canton merchants are looking upon the boycott against Japan with dis- favour.
