LONDON, May 5th. The most remarkable murder trial within living memory has just con- cluded at the Old Bailey, resulting in the conviction of two men named Browne and Kennedy for the mur- Essex der of a policeman in Brown had a garage at Clapham Junction, and Kennedy worked for him, ostensibly as a clerk, but really as an expert accomplice in They both stealing motor-cars.

Why Gutteridge held them up will never be known. He was found on the roadside with four ballet wounds in the bead, and a horrible feature of the crime was that a bullet had been fired through each eye. Two of the bullets were near the body. Later the same morning the doctor's car was found aban doned in a cul-de-sac at Brixton. On the floor of the car was a spent revolver cartridge. This was all that Scotland Yard detectives had to go upon. There was no clue to the identity of the murderers; in fact there was nothing to connect the person, or persons who stole the car with the roadside murder.

Clever Detective Work.

The King has awarded the Ed- ward Medal to Mr. C. H. Van Straate.

"When a bag of explosive caught fire last May in a mine belonging to the Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company, South Africa, M Van Straate ran past the burning explosive, although he wae "enve- loped in the poisonous fumes, and warned a number of men who were in danger.

Mr. Van Straate fetched out two natives. By this time he was feel ing the effect of the fumes. He reported the danger, of a third native to the shift boss. Mr. Van Straate then took personal charge of the rescued persone and conduct. ed them to the surface.

The Government Inspector of Mines for the district described the risk which Mr. Van Straate took a appalling, and as Mr. Van Straate is a man with many years' experi- ence of mining, the risk must have been well known to him.

Sydney agents for a London pro- vision firm have been instructed to arrange for the shipment of frozen, turtles to England at the rate of 200 a month. Arrangements are being made in Queensland for the supply of the turtles.
