Tyre Makers
in
Victoria's Reign
HEN ladies started cycling thirty- one years ago they rode on Dunlop tyres. And the lady cyclist of these days accepted Dunlops as a matter of course. You wanted a pneumatic tyre-you ordered a Dunlop. A Dunlop tyre was no novelty to them. Simply be- cause even at that time Dunlop had been making tyres for ten years. To-day, of course, Dunlop have been makers-and the leading makers-of pneumatic tyres for forty years. There's r deal of experience to be gained in forty years of tyre making for every kind of vehicle running on every kind of surface, and at speeds ranging from the 20 miles hour of the early motor carriages
per to the 203.8 miles per hour of Segrave's Sunbeam.

REPORTS SUMMED UP.
GOOD FOR CARS-BAD FOR
* HEALTH.
[BY THE MOTORING CORRESPONDENT]
A copy to hand of the Daily Mail gives an interesting summing up of the exhaustive experiments regard- ing the suitability of this new form of motor fuel
Two distinct objects were aimed at in the Daily Mail investigations: 1. To obtain for car and motor-eycle ownets authentic in formation regarding the effects of "ethyl petrol on the running of their machines and on the en- gines and their components.
9. To obtain in the interests of the public generally and from an unbiased source information concerning the health aspects of this new fuel, which contains small quantities of lead tetra- ethyl,
These questions were a source of lively discussion following the in- troduction of this petrol from the United States.
To deal with the purely motoring intereste first. What effect har ethyl petrol on the running of mator-cars and motor-cycles!
This can be summed up briefly from the reports of the road trials of the medium-powered and small family cars and the motorcycle which were used in the Daily Mail tests.
Better hill-climbing was report- ed by all three drivers. Pinking (violent instead of an even ex plosion) was almost eliminated in the case of the medium-powered engine, which was prone to this ailment when run on ordinary petrol.
The driver of the medium- powered car reported smoother running at the lower speeds. In "the case of the small car a vibra- tion period in the engine die- appeared when ethyl petrol was used. Acceleration was improved with the medium-powered car and the motor-cycle, and to a lesser degree with the small car.
Difficulty in starting was ex- perienced with the family car during the last 500 miles of the road tnal. Slight sparking plug trouble occurred in the care of the motor-cycle. No disadvant- ages were reported by the driver of the medium-powered car, which completed its 5,000 miles without an involuntary stop.
No increase in maximum speed with any of the vehicles.
No appreciable difference in petrol or oil consumption.

Very similar results can be ob tained by a mixture of benzoi and petrol in a proportion suitable to individual engines.
The disadvantages in running op ethyl petrol are only slight.
The Disadvantages.
The mechanical examinations of the engines carried out by the Research Association of British Motor and Allied Manufacturers showed that:
In the case of the medium- powered car the only mechanical disability traceable to the use of ethyl petrol was the severe cor- rosion of one valve,
The sparking plugs of the light car engine suffered owing to de- posite of lead salts which ac counted for difficulty in starting.
One of the sparking plugs of the motor-cycle engine showed puncturing of the, mita ingule tion.
The disabilities cannot be de- ecribed as serious.
