PEKING REPLIES TO JAPAN.

CHANG TSO LIN TO
TO FENGTIEN?
The Peking Foreign Office open their note of reply to the Japanese memorandum by pointing out that the Japanese and Marshal Chang Tso Lin, as shown in his circular telegram, are both seeking the same ends. In the matter of Japanese intervention in Manchuria, however, the Peking note shows determination, saying that they can never agree to any proposition of Japan taking mea- sures to deal with the situation in Manchuria.
וי
There has been little serious fighting recently between North and South, both sides have probably been too much occupied with the Japanese question, but it appears now as though the next im- portant battle will be at Hokien, which lies between the Peking- Hankow and the Timtain-Pukow Railways. Here both the Feng- tienese and the Nationalists are reported to be massing troops. Meanwhile Feng claims to be closing in on. Tientsin.
Or the Shansi front too the Fengticaese aro taking up strong defensive positions, to meet the attacks the Yen Shih Shan, the. Shansi Tupan. The main resistance will be put upʻat Kalgan, but there are other Fengtienesc army corps stationed along the rail- way between this point and Peking.
The case of General Ching Chien, who was subdued by Li Tsung Jen a day or two ago, is apparently raising a certain amount of interest.. It is quite clear that the early report of his execution is unfounded. Admiral Yang Shu Wang has inter- ed a plea that Li Tsung Jen should allow hira to go to Nanking and explain his case.
The rallway from Peking to Fengtien, according to a late cable to the vernacular papers, it crowded with Fengtienese supporters, while. 1,500 of Marshal Chang Tso Lin's bodyguard have already moved to Fengtien.. It is thought that Marshal Chang Tao Lin may be re-considering his decision not to retire from Peking.
