AGENTS IN HONG KONG:
MR. MCCALLUM ON RECENT
PROGRESS.
A YEAR OF RECORDS.
The Agent-General in London for Western Australia, the Hon. W. C. Angwin, spoke at a luncheon at the Hotel Cecil in very optimis tic terms of the prospects of the great province.
Last year, he said, had been one of records, They had never had such a time of records." They bad created a "record" trade They had a "record" harvest, & record area under crop, are cord of new land taken up for settlement, a “record" number of sheep in the State, record" wool production, "record" apple year, a "record" in build ing values, and a "record" in railway receipts. The people in their State had never been in such good heart, and never in the his- tory of the State had they been so optimistic about the future as at the present time. In the early his tory of the Commonwealth it had been regarded as the Cinderella State, but now it was viewed with envy, and the eyes of Australia were turned on the development which was taking place in Westera Australia.

ROYAL PAINTINGS OF UNDERSEA LIFE.
Lady Patricia Ramsay, whose re markable talent as an artist has long been known to her friends, is holding the first public exhibition of her picturis at the Goupil Gallery.
Income-Tax Koduced, The finances of the country were in a very sound condition and there had been" a reduction of 50 per cent, in the income-tax since their Government had come into office. They had reduced the in- come-tax so that the money pro- duced in Western, Australia might go in development and investment within the State. In spite of this reduction of income-tax they had been able to balance the ledger and had entered into new agreements with the Commonwealth, and the whole financial possibilities of the She bag been in Bermuda and State were being reviewed, and Ceylon, and the pictures show they hoped they would be able to Cingalese landscapes painted in give further relief. The next loan would mature in 1934, and already they had the cash to mest it, and so far as the finance of the country was concerned they were in a very sound position.
They had had a bad time during the War, but it was now far enough

Like the old masters, she paints from memory" and sketches, and records rather an impression of a scene than a copy of its appearance. The tropical vegetation and wonderful colours of Ceylon are admirably suggested in a number of her pictures, one of which shows oven in a rice feld, and another a view looking down through palm trees on a bay where quaint sailing boats are drawn up on the beach.
