[BY GLG).
Chinese students have, for the past few years, come in for an sparing criticism They have been sccused of spreading chaos by their street corner harangues and leaving their elders to make the best of si bad job.
While this is more or less true a distinction must be drawn between the advanced students and those who have just passed the elementary stages
Students in the senior classes are, as a rule, docile young men who take very little interest in politica

propagands.
Students of the middle and lower Achools are the chief source of trouble. They are easily swayed by propaganda and think that they are quite able to conduct the affairs of the State. They are always to the fore when there is the least sign of trouble.
These lads are a constant source of worry and anxiety to their parents, and, in recent years to the state, but if one looks into their circumstances and environment, one cannot help having a good deal of sympathy with them,
To speak candidly one now finds few schools in China which are really worthy of the name. In big eities
Tientsia, like Shanghai, Peking and Hankow there are schools run by British and American Missions and their students are in every way superior to the boys attending semi-Chinese schools.
In these latter schools the boys are taught all about theories of the rights and equalities of man which tend to develop more self-import ance than sense of responsibility, Many of the teachers are by no means blameless of suggesting that they and their pupils are quite the equals of the most eminent men in the world and that they have a right to dictate to those responsible, for the administration of law and order. The radical changes now in pro- gress in China have been too much for the young people. Déep rooted tradition, old ways of living, and above all, the respect and reverence which, for thousands of years,” a young Chinese had always shown to his elders and superiors have been almost swept away. Is it any wonder that with bad teachers, in- different parents and self-seeking
