GOLF NOTES.

[BY-RE.H.]

For those who doserted Fanling on Saturday because it was too hot, or owing to the claims of tennis and other sports, opa felt a self-righteous ayinpathy of rather an "I told you so" kind. Saturday at Fanling was about the best day for golf that has occurred for a long time now, at any rate during a week end There was no rain at all, a gentle breeze, and it was beautifully cool Furthermore, the course was empty, and the rain during the week bad freshened up the fairways and made the greens easy paced There is still a lot of grass on the greens and they are a little bit bumpy, but it is very dificult to find much fault with them. Most of the errors complained of are still

To all appearances Hong Kong is to be faced by one of the strongest teams fielded by Shanghai since the Interport was revived after the Great War. in the surface of the green

The course is becoming a hive of activity now-a-days. New bunkers continue to spring up, and most of the earlier work has been turfed over and seems to be getting along pretty well. A new tea is being built at Bandy's Pulpit about twenty yards behind the present one and higher up the hillside. From here it will need something of a super- shot to reach the green and only the mightiest in the land will be able to get there. Some of the lest mighty will regret that a really fine one-shotter is going at times to be converted into a drive and a pitch of a sort, but to those who cannot quite reach the green at present there will be very little "difference, merely the question of a yard or two more on the mashic shot. The hole is a bogey 4 the card, and there are at present too many 3's being got here, and it is no bad thing to decrease this number if possible.

en

I was glad to find out that the two fine looking now, tens at the 10th, which, as tees, were placed in auch preposterous positions that no one could possibly play any hole from them, are not really tees at all, but are two very elegant piles of soil which will be used for dress ing the 15th fairway. When the dressing is down on this fairway, the Armchair will be much more of a serious than it is at present, for a second will have to carry

every inch of the way if it is going to reach the green. There is going to be top-dressing at the 13th tan at the top of the hill, which for a week or two will make the most difficult on the course even more lieve, is about all that is to be fiendishly difficult. That, I be done to the course just at present, as the ground just short of the "4th green is not quite ready to be

dealt with yet.

"When one sits back and calculates how one's bogey round of 6 down should have been a dead certain. 4 up, the Old Course does not appear frightfully difficult. There are one or two 5's which as often as not might be 4's, and one or two 4's which almost might be 3's. Alto gether the bogey of the course appears fairly liberal. Yet it is very seldom, in matches, in Inter ports, or even in the big holiday competitions, that the course is made to look even slightly out of countenance, very rarely indeed, that it looks ridiculous. "

He enjoys match playing and possesses a sound idea of the game. His backhand is somewhat weak, but otherwise he plays a forceful game.

Yow Man Kit is a sprightly young exponent who picked up the game in a short time. He has got set reached first class standard; ont can be relied upon to give a good performance in Shanghai. He plays a very good doubles game.
