SPEED TRAPS IN ENGLAND, SIR G. RYRIE ON EMPIRE (ZOO'S MENU FOR A YEAR.
POLICE CHIEFS SAY THEY "ARE USELESS.
CAREFUL DRIVER
PUNISHED,"
A Home paper publishes some comments by chief constables on the suggestion that the police should abandon the system now in vogue in many parts of Britain of trapping motorists for speed of safe roads, and immediately concentrate on bringing to book the reckless road
user.
The careful driver is punished for exceeding the speed limit though the road may be clear and he may be driving with perfect safety, while more often than not the reckle driver goes scot free,
Patrols At Bends.
A "Motoring Correspondent aug. gests that mobila police in cars, should patrol the roads and take action in every case of driving to 'the common ́ ́danger. They would keep observation on bends, etc., and if they saw a case of “cutting-in they would prosecute.
·Chief Constablös' Views. The following views were given to reporters1:
MR. B. Hores, ching constable of Leicestershire. I have never used speed traps for I do not believe in them. A man may be driving on certain roads at well over the speed limit, and yet be no danger to anyone. On the other hand, in certain circumstances, he may be below the limit and yet driving dangerously,
Ma. W. R WILKIE, chief constable of Glossop.-The day of police traps has gone.
The
MAJOR C. V. GODFREY, chief con- stable of Salford-We do not use traps for light motors. "driving to the public danger." section of the Motor-car- Act is sufficient for them,
Deterrent To Fast Drivers. COL F. BROOx, chief constable of Nottingham.-Speed traps are little if any use Motor patrols would be a great deterrent, as dangerous drivers would not know if they were being, followed or
net.
CAPT. J. W. Mcons, chief constable
of Huddersfield and president- clect of the Chief Constables Association-Speed traps are out of date. If it was kiown that the police patrol was on the road -I would act as a deterrent to
and high-speeders
to those thoughtless motorists who take the risks that are so often the cause of accidenta CAPT. A. C. DAWSON, chief constable of Birkenhead.-Police officials in motor vehicles are much more effective than police traps. LIEUT.-COL, G. L. ORMEROD, chief constable for East Sussex-What I am keen upan is that the special speed limits at dangerous places shall be properly observed.

"As aurely as the Dominions must fad a market over-scas for their surplus primary, products so surely must they take manufactured or luxury goods in exchange," Sir Granville adds. But it is their wish, as tangibly expressed in their! tariff policy
that as much as pos sible of such trade should be with the Motherland."
Sir William Crawford, of the Empire Marketing Board, has been anking a special investigation of the causes of Britain commanding only 50 per cent. of the total import trade of the Empire. He said to a Daily Mail reporter:
The home manufacturers as whole do not study the pos- sibilities of the Empire marketa with the necessary, scientific know- ledge of their needs, but the main reason is the wrong use they have made of the "Buy British Goods" slogan,
They have employed that slogan solely to develop a demand for their goods at their own doorstep, and appear to be satisfied with the limited results it has pro- duceL
