After his return to China; Mr. Ku served for seventeen years as secretary to Viceroy Chang Chih Tang, whose headquarters were at Wuchang. Out of this experience came the " Papers from a Viceroy's Yamen," published anonymously, which gave ample evidence that the secretary, was thoroughly familiar, with all the intrigue and squeeze and irregularities which went on in such an office. The papers showed, too, that he could condemn these practices in the most scathing terms. It is small wonder that he most carefully preserved the anony- mity of these papers för many years after they were written.
Among his other works were: "The Story of a Chinese Oxford DEAD MAN COMES BACK. Movement, Translations of Die- courses and Sayings of Confucius," "The Conduct of Life' and Medan. DOCTOR'S SON AS AN ENOCH" Higher Education." Samantonioter. | "

Then he stepped out of more active life, though he retained a keen interest in developments. In 1925-28 he lectured in Japan, fol- lowing a brief service as advisor to Chang Tso Lin which latter posi- tion he threw up because the then ruler of Manchuria would not listen to his advice.
