A MI ADER OF SEVEN YEARS

Charged with a murder which was atated to have been committed seven years ago, a Chincec was dis- charged by Mr. R. E. Landsell st the Central Magistracy owing to the prosecution being unable to produce certain witnesses from Canton. Inspector Lane said that they had refused to come down.
INDIFFERENCE I
In conversation later with our representative, Captain Dollar re- called that, while he and Mr. eplying to the Magistrate, Mr. Dollar were lunching one day in A. E. Cer tain weak spots could be observed. such as an occasional rifle badly sloped or a slight departure from the rigid attitude essential after the command attention was given, but there were surprisingly few and these only served to call attention to the high general state of efficiency
of the Corps.
The March Past.
J
After the inspection by the Gen- eral the Corps marched past in column headed by the Commandant who joined the inspecting officers on the official platform after giving the salate. On the platform with the General were Mr. Stirling Fas- senden, Chairman of the Municipal Council, several members of the Council and other officials, and it was pleasing to note the presence of several prominent Chinese officers and officials who were obviously very favourably impressed.
The march past was excellent in every respect and of a much higher standard than in previous years.
Notes On The Units
If comparisons have to be made it is probable that the Machine Gun Company, would be voted the most impressive unit on the parade,
at their doors and used to know her, and would call out Good morning; Mr. Dollar ' -44 the Passed."
"One Big Family,*i Captain Dollar, though he is" now white-haired and well advanced in age still takes an active interest both in the great line which Bears his name, and in world affairs in general. "He" is loved and revered wherever he goes and most especi- ally by his employees in whose wel- fare he takes a fatherly interest: He has since Christmas entertained personally over 700 of his en ployees, and at a big dinner given at the end of last year in San Francisco to 200 of them he urged them to remember that they were one big family" and to for- get that he was an employer and treat him as a father,
His generosity is well known in Shanghai where he has big estates, and only a short while ago he gave a large sum of money for the Euro- pean Y.M.C.A. there. He also wup- porte a free echool, on his estate, for Chinese children, and when he was last there be visited the school, with Mrs. Dollar and his nieces, and presented each child with a bag of sweets and some pencils.
