DEMANDS REJECTED BY NATIONALISTS. dignation at Southern barbarities,

Fighting has again broken out between the Nationalists and the Japanese at Tainan. It seems clear that this renewal of hostili- ties is the to demanda put forward by the Japanese General to which the Nationalists refused to accede.

It is difficult to decide which was the aggressor in the further outbreak of hostilities A Japanese report, coming from Tsinan ria Tringtao, states that Japanese troops, having, decided that drastic action was necessary, attacked and routed the Southerners, blowing up their ammunition dump. On the other hand, a message from Peking states that though the Japanese had decided to take. active measures, the trouble was actually started by Nationalist soldiers.

"A late message to the vernacular papers states that Japanese troops have left Nagoya for Tsingtao on board 25 transports. On the arrival of these troops, there will be 98,000 Japanese troops in Shantung.

An international train has been run from Tsinan to Tsingtao, and some 70 foreigners have sought the greater safety of the port. Japanese troops, are accupying almost all stations on the line, but later fighting has broken out again on the railway.

The story of the brutal murder of Tani Kung Chjeh, the Foreign -Commissioner of Shanting, together with sixteen other officials, is now categorically denied by Japanese cable from Tokyo. The whole story is stated to be a deliberate fabrication by the Chinese authorities, put about with the intention of evading responsibility for the whole Tsinan affair.
