WOMEN AS MEN'S COMPETITORS.

PATTING BALLS OVER. A NET.

MR. GEORGE MOORE'S SATIRE.

Lesbos, April 3rd. Piquant criticisms of distinguish

ed writers and also, of women were made yesterday by Mr. Georgs Moore, the 16-years-old novelist, poet, and essayist.

Mr. Moore, who is in a London nursing home and was out of bed yesterday for the first time for two months following an operation, seemed almost as pleased over that fact as he was over the production of his play, The Life of an Immortal," at the Arts Theatre' on the previous night. Giving his im pressions of modern literature, art, and women he said:

J

I absolutely refuse to speak about my living contemporaries because there is not one worth talking about.

As regards those who have died recently, Thomas Hardy could not write two lines of correct English together, and, instead af being considered a master of Eng lish country life, should have been considered more like a country schoolmaster. Besides, as is evid. ent in Tea, he had no insigh: into human nature.

Then, to take another example, Conrad's works will be dead in a year. Anyone could write the sort of stuff he wrote about barges floating about in green-blue hates.

In my opinion, this generation is the most sterils of any thers has been in the way of literature. There is not one outstanding. genius.

It is much the same with music and art-just a mere spitting at the stars, and when women try to spit, too, and do what men do, the position is worse than ever. It is as ridiculous for women to think that they can compete with men at it is to suppose that with a ware of a stick it is possible to turn a white rose bush into a red one..

Women were far better off when they sat up in a tower embroider ing beautiful tapestries rathe than patting bails over a net from one year's end to another. There was something lasting in that tapestry, but what is coming af all this ball-patting Nothing! He blamed education, of which he said there was far too

"who particularly for woman, ought to work with her hands. rather than her brain." He added, however:

I hate all this Victorian con-i vention which still lingers.... But in spite of all this I love womes, and I cannot think how I should have got through life without them..

Speaking of his play, he said he started "The Life of an Imraortal" four years ago and got tired of it when half way through. Later he determined to finish it and wrote the second half anyhow," and in the ordinary idiom, whereas the first part was in the Elizabethan idiom. Two days afterwards an Ameri- ean came to ask the if I had any abort thing which he could pub- lish. I showed him the play, which he pronounced to be exact ly what he wasted, and, after altering the second half to it the first half, he walked off with the MS. and I with £450-which I thought was a very good sum for it.

SOME CODE SIGNS."

LONDON, April 8th. Secret gas used by the leading lights of the underworld, changing,, from day to day, month to month, year to year, are one of the biggest Baags Scotland Yard have to co-

then rounding tend with criminal gangs.

up

Occasionally: "the police obtain knowledge of this silent language, but no sooner have they mastered its intricacies than they find that the signals have changed. It is a perpetual war-pollee and crooks.

The professional mobsmen usuni- ly assemble in the saloon bars of public-houses or hotel bars. They usually hunt in pairs, accompanied sometimes by a woman.

Confidence men, are likely to use the following signs during the com- ing tourist season. If you see a man playing with one of his own jacket buttons, he is signalling to a con- federate to be cautious. His pal scratches his right ear meaning "All right, I am keeping my eyes peeled.

A

man at aber holds out his cigar and knocks the h

is signalling to his female, com- panion "The mat 1"am pointing at has just opened a wallet filled with notes."

Perhaps he may have croased his left leg over his right. His con- federate then knows not to trouble about the man on his right.

The Female Of The Species, " If you should strike up an ne- quaintance with a woman in a res taurant be cautious about the man sitting at a table with his thumb and two fugers together. He is king your companion "Has your

hy money?"

Should your friend look inta a mirror to powder her face it means Yes. If she keeps powdering her face then the signal has passed that you have got plenty.

If she lights a cigarette, holding it between the left thumb and fin ger, she is saying "I want to in- troduce you, because

I aced your assistance to rob him."
