REPUBLICAN PLOT AGAINST THE FREE STATE.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

LONDON, April 7th. Prince George is about to follow" his brother's example "and become Tn Freemason. I understand he is to be initiated into the Navy Lodge (No. 2012) soon after his return from the cruise of the Atlantic Fleet now in progress. There is a certain appropriateness in Prince George joining this particular Lodge. Not only. is the membership composed largely of Naval officers, but the Duke of York is Worshipful Master for the year, and as such will, of course, have much to do with the ceremony of initiation, The Prince of Wales has passed through the chair of the Navy Lodge, and in other ways has distinguished himself in Freemasonry,

AGENTS IN HONG KONG:

"Dirt Track" Motoring,

I hear in sporting circles that there is a likelihood of motor-cycle "dirt track" racing becoming & crase in England shortly, and that it may, indeed, become as popular bere as in Australia. There is even some talk that it may become a serious rival to greyhound racing. A few courses have been laid out and races held on them, with the usual "thrills" for the spectators when the riders take the corners at 70 miles an hour. The right way to take a corner is to make the machine skid round it without slackening speed. In certain parts of Australia, the home of dirt track" racing, these motor-cycle speedways have emptied the grey hound racing trpeks

Arrangements are being made for the construction of courses for the new sport in London, Manchester Newcastle and Blackpool, and a cable from Brisbane received here this week states that 12 crack Australian riders have left to ride in this country, One thing in favour of the sport is that the tracks can be made in comparatively small compass. The real Australian track is" only 375 yards round. It is 85 feet wide at the bends, and 30 feet wide on the streight. Most of the Australian riders own their own machines, and it is stated that a good man can earn as much as 200 in one evening in the shape of prize money!..

Popular Composer's Death. Many readers on your side will learn with regret of the death of Mr. Leslio Stuart, the composer of popular songs, whose gift for melody was greater than that of any other composer of his genera tion. As a writer of light music he was supreme, as was seen in Buch musical comedies as · Floro- dora,"

which was tuneful and charm- ing. But his best work was done as a song writer far the music balis.

"Yes, and the year after that, I expect, although I would not like to prophesy," replied Mr. Lubbock. and drove away. The man in the strect took the registration number of the motor and told the police, who found on inquiry that the re- gistration number was false. This raised suspicions that there was something that required clearing up, so the police or rather the Scot- land Yard branch-got busy.

Before long they discovered that there was excellent reason for Laise registration of a motor van which carried revolvers in packages-no thing less, in fact, than a con spiracy organised by Irish Repub- licana in London. These precious

scoundrels have been making dumps of firearms which, they had smuggled into this country, and altogether they had about a hundred dumps in different parts of London. As far as can be ascertained they had conceived a plot to upset the Free State Government.

The Object In View.

It may seem a round-about way to strike at the Free State Govern ment in Dublin by secreting fire. arms in London. But the idea was that, when the time was ripe for action, disorders were to break out The in Ireland and in London. plotters were to create such a feel- ing of alarm here that the British Government would be unable to send troops to the assistance of the Free State. The conspirators used to meet in London at lectures ostensibly held for the purpose of encouraging the study of Irish his
