WOMEN AND HOLY

DISCUSSION AT HOME.

THE FATHER OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS.

HIS SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME FOR THE IRISH.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

LONDON, March 30th.""

A mild discussion has been start- ed on the question whether women should be admitted to Holy Orders, Trenn Inge, in the Evening Standard comes out strongly on the side of the women. He sees a lot of good ther could do as clerics. Women, he holds, should be advised by women, and. clergymen dislike and are embarrassed by confidences or confessions by the other sex,

On the other side we have the Bishop of Durham dead against the ordination of women. He admits that there is a dearth of candidates. for Holy Orders, but the shortage is not to be met by bringing women into the ministry of the Church. "There is no assumption of female inferiority in excluding women," he states, but only a recognition of their distinctiveness in a natural function, and that distinctiveness cannot be ignored. I find no reason in the present situation, and none in the

spiritual achievements of women, past or present, which could justify so great a breach with the traditions of Christendom as the admission of women to Holy Orders on equal terms with men.”

SANDALWOOD FOR CHINA.

£1,000,000 CONTRACT FOR

·JOSS HOUSES.

SIGNED. IN AUSTRALIA.

A contract worth £1,000,000 was signed, recently in a Perth office, when Mr. Lon Ping, representing & combination of Chinese merchants, arranged for a three years' supply of sandalwood to be sent at regular intervals to Chinese ports. This contract represents the largest sandalwood contract in the world, and is one of the biggest business deals ever made in the Common wealth...

For over 80 years, the business of the import, into China of sandal wood for use in the joss houses and for religious ceremonies in the families of Chinese has been con ducted by British houses established in China, relates the Sydney Sun.

Under Uhinese Control Modernizing of Chinese, however, boycott of the British trader some has seen a change, for following the two years ago, the Chinese have themselves entered the trade, and now seek to save the commission which was hitherto paid to the white trader.

Towards that end an association of Chineze merchants is being formed, which will work on more or less co operative principles. Orders will be pooled and shipments carried out in bulk instead of individual lots.

Inquiry in various circles bas elicited that, although the sandal wood industry has for the last 20 years been regarded as dying, one of the biggest. quantities of sandal wood which has ever left the State has been exported during the last

ten years.
