FENGTIEN SUCCESS ON SHANSI BORDER.

BOTTLING UP THE SHANSI TROOPS,

FIGHTING IN WEST SHANTUNG.

THE QUESTION OF MARSHAL LI TSAI HSIN'S

RETURN.

DEFEAT OF THE CHRISTIAN GENERAL.

It seems certain that the Fengtienese have scored the first dalinite success of the offensive in capturing Tsingsing on the Chentai Railway, and in driving the Shansi troops back into the Niangtaekwan Pass, which is a precipitous defile in the moun- mains on the Shansi border.

The intention of the Fengtienese appears to be to bottle up the Shansi forces in this pass, when they will have no scope what- soever for action. When the Northerners have thus managed to safeguard their exposed flank, they are expected to more south against Marshal Feng Yu Hsiang.

Northerners and Southerners are also in conflict on the Tamingfu front, where General Chu Yu Pu has ordered an attack upon the Kuominchua, At present the result of this battle is unknown. Marshal Sun Chuan Fang has proceeded to Tsining to direct operation on this front.

The question of Marshal Li Tsai Hsin's return to Canton is not very easily decided. Marshal Li is at present in Haugchow- and says that when he reaches Shanghai he will be able to deter mine definitely what course he will pursue. On the other hand, there are reports which make it appear. that Marsebab Li is virtually a prisoner in the hands of Marshal Chiang Kai Shek.

Marshal Feng Yu Hsiang has met with a defeat in Southern Chihli at the hands of the Fengtienese forces and has lost a battalion which has been captured, NORTHERNERS CLAIM
