THE GREEN BAY TREE.

BLACKWOOD, PORCELAIN:

AND JADE.

The Oriental Department of Lass, Chawrond's is flourishing like the Proverbial bay tree. From a com paratively humble beginning some weeks ago with a few choice pieces of old Cantonese Blackwood, it has grown until it threatens to drive cut entirely the European style furnishings from the department which houses both collections.

Silks, the "wonderful embroidery of China, scraps of the finery of her past monarchical glories, followed Blackwood, and this week has zeen the intrusion of porcelain. I saw there some really lovely sets of dessert plates for the extraordinary prices of $7 and $10 the dozen; vasce, large and small; ginger jars, in the familiar and ever delight ful blue and white; bowls and statuettes. None of these are worth less; some I suspect worth consider ably more than is being asked for them: and all of them decorative and desirable.

As for the Blackwood, it goes out as fast as it comes in. There are indeed one or two astute persons who pay a daily visit and seldom leave without some treasure to add to their collections. For though the
