ITS INTRODUCTION INTO CHINA
A ROTEST.
[BY RAPIER]
Tent the introduction of grey hound racing into the Far East is andesirable was to have been the subject of a debate at the local Y.M.O.A. but the venus chosen was not, a happy one as it was found impossible to get together sufficient opposition to justify my attendance in support of the theme. This speaks well for the soundness of the views held by those belonging to the in- stitation. In a dumb community. the written word must therefore suffice although 'tis sad ne "speech is morning to the mind: it spreads ths beauteous images abroad, which else lie furled or clouded in the soul."

the words of Mr. Charles A. Muna, the American millionaire, who said "I brought the idea of the electric hare to England three Handicap Doubles, Fears ago, and the Greyhound Racing Association was formed to take up and develop the sport." have been closely associated with it ever since, and in that short space of time more than 1,000 dogs have been registered and run on our tracks. I believe so much in the greyhound racing that I have neger taken a penny out of it. All my money is still in it, and it will re- main there.”- It will be seen" from the words in italics that Mr. Munn is quite straightforward about it. He is acting purely as a financier and is not concerned with the effect of the introduction of this mechanical germ into the sporting life of the nation. No doubt he is unaware that the surest way to wreck the British Empire is to undermine its hitherto fundamentalm ly sound standards of sport Un- fortunately many of those who have followed in his train are not equally bonest, and in this attempt to tranaform players at games into gamesters they have given a sport- ing tinge to their activities and have not hesitated to use their military titles to impress the public. The voice of the Church has been raised against this vice in England, but the public are inclined to treat this opposition lightly as it is automatic and springs primarily from a sense of duty What is needed is & vigorous anti- dog racing campaign by those closely connected with true sport and jealous of its good name,
The introduction of games by us into the Far East such as football, cricket tennis, etc., has considerably enhanced our prestige as, played in the proper spirit, they are of im.. mense moral and physical value. When it comes to introducing into China a new gambling craze those
