WEDNESDAY'S LEAGUE

MATCHES.

{THROUGH-EIUTER'S 'AGENCY.]

LONDON, March 2sih, matches played to-day :- The following were the results of

"ENGLISH LEAGUE.

Division I Arsenal 0, Portsmouth “ Derby C. 3, Manchester U. 0. Sunderland 0, Tottenham 0.

Division II. (Southern), Gillingham, Exeter 1

Weather and ground" conditions proved to be far from satisfactory League yesterday when the Hong Kong Cricket Club Tournament recom,, menced after a break the previous i day. Much interest centred in the appearance of the Rumjähns against the Greens in the Open Doubles Championship of the Colony and a good crowd turned up to watch the match. The Rumjahn cousins wod as expected, but they had to goal out to win the first sat which went to sixteen games. They took the two following sets, how- eyer, fairly comfortably, the final score in their favour being 9-7, 6-2, 8-1.

The Rumjahns have been seen to play better tennis than they showed yesterday and it seems that from the form other pairs in the Tourna- ment have shown that the struggle for the Open Doubles will be very

степ,

16

Their combination was not as good as usual. S. A. Rumjahn was not quite as consistent as asual and although he made some fine chote, he missed his mark often during the match. The Greens put up a very good performance and deserved credit for making the scure even after being 3-3 down in

the first set.

They troubled their opponents lot by taking the lead at 6-5. They led again at 7-6 and the Rumjahna had to extend themselves fully to win the first set at 8-7. Thereafter many games went to deuces before being decided, but the Rumjahns bad the upper hand most of the time.

"Sammy" Green gave a forceful performance and sent many stinging drivea over the net. He remained At the baseline "most of the time and the Rumjahns beat him occa- sionally with drop shots. His son backed him ably yesterday and made fewer mistakes than usual.

The Rumjabns now meet the win- ners of T. Honda and T: Akiyama Chan So and He Yai Hing in the third round, the ultimate win- ners to enter the semi-final.

Other Matches.

T. Honda and T. Akyama best E. D. Lawrence and W. A. Nowers easy in straight eets, conceding only six games in the match.

C. H. Bradley (owe 1/6) entered the semi-final of the Handicap Singles "B" by beating C. L. C Bandes (rec. 3/6) by the odd set in three. He now meets the win- ner of T. G. Bennett (rec-1/6) e. J. Wilkie (owé 3/8).?
