[A meeting (of the Legisintive Council was held in the Council Chamber yesterday afternoon, H.E The annual inspection of the Hong the Governor presided and there Kong Volunteer Defence Corps by were present H.E the General Major-General C. The inspection then took place of the Companies drawn up on three sides of the ground, alter which the troops marched past in column. Sir Cecil Clementi and Marshal Li Tsai Hein made important pronouncements with regard to the future relationship between the two ports. His Excellency also referred to the favour with which Hong Kong regarded the proposed loopline connecting Canton's two stations and also the linking up of the Canton-Shinkwan line with that from Hankow to Chuchow.
Reports received Daily from Canton show that satisfactory progress is being made with the Government's scheme of reconstruction, the Central Bank of China Notes are recovering their value and increasing confidence in a trade revival is shown by the merchants, though they are still anxious to see Canton disentangled from any commitments with the Nanking Government.
The news from the war area suggests preparation for a renewed offensive by the Nationalists with Peking as their objective Chiang Kai Shek is the driving power behind this project.
