HINTS ABOUT FINESSING.

FOR SERIOUS-BRIDGE

PLAYERS.

[BY HUGH ELLIOT:]

A very common type of hand, in which players often go wrong is that where a fincasa can be taken in two different ways)

Suppose, for instance, that the declarer holds A, Kn, X, X, spades, and dummy “holds K, 10, xx, there are three different ways in which the suit may be led There are nine spados between" the two hands, and the declarer may either lead out his see and king of |spades on the first two tricks in the hope of dropping the queen or he may play the ace on the first trick and nesse the 10 on the second¡ or "he may play the king on the first trick and finesse the knave on the second. In different circum- stances any of these three ways may bo right.

If there has been no bidding and no clue to the adversaries' cards the correct course is to play out the nce and the king on the first two tricks. But it there has been any bidding, the case is immediate

altered. If one adversary' has bid no-trumps, he is more likely to have the queen of spades than his partner. If, on the other hand, ene adversary has bid hearts, dia monds, or clubs, he is less likely to have the queen of spades than his partner, for his hand is marked with several cards of the suit which he has bid, and there is by' that amount less room in it for the queen of spades.

- Is There A Cluat Before starting to play his apades, the declarer should there- före consider what clue he possesses as to the position of the Queen. If he has no clue, be will play out the Ace and King on the first two tricks. But if there is the least presumption that the Queen is in one band rather than the other, he will assume that it is in that hand, and will fincase, against it on the second round, if it has not fallen before the finesse becomes neces- Kary,

Finessing against two cards, in troduces somewhat greater compli cation. If, for instance, the do clarer" holds A, Q, 10, x'x, of a suit with a few small once in Dummy, the best way to clear the suit is to finesse the 10 on the first round, and the Queen on the second If these are nine or more of the suit between the two hands, the should be finessed on the first round, as that gives the best chance of establishing the suit with out losing a trick

This rule, again, only holds good in the absence of any information about the adversaries' hands. There are cases in which it is right to finesse the 10 on the first round, even if there are nine between the two hands. The reader will have no difficulty now in distinguishing these cases.、

The Prince who was the princi- pal guest at the annual dinner of the Birmingham Jewellers' and Silversmiths Amociation, said:

A Prequent Mistake, While on the subject of finessing, I may perhaps be pardoned for mentioning a mistake, which is often made, although it is of a very rudimentary character. Where the declarer has A, Q, x, x, x, of a suit and his dummy hus Ka, X, I it is surprising how many people persist in leading the Kn through. The correct procedure, of course, is to lead a small one from dumny and to finesse the Q. If the finesse comes off, the A should be played en the chance of dropping the K when the En becomes good in dummy, and the suit is cleared: without the loss of a trick. If the Kn is led on the first round the suit cannot possibly be cleared without losing a trick for it is bound to be destroyed by the K. whichever side the K may be, and either the first round will be won by the R or the third round, by the 10. The Kn therefore should not be led from dummy unless it is backed by the 10,

I have been told the origin of them is this: about 100 years ago men wore soft pleated shirts in the evening, and then, when mangles were invented, it was found that the shirts were turned from the laundry with the buttons ground and broken in fragment of studs were in vented. But study, won't stay putin' soft shirt, so our ances tors, decided to have their shirts starched, and that, I believe, is the evolution of the hailed shirt, which has caused ne and, in fact, the whole human race, tory, such untold misery.

The only course that would naturally: occur to him would be to place the Head so that the adversaries will be compelled to lead the suit But often this may be impossible, and coup may then sometimes be brought off by boldly leading the Q. If the adversary on the left has K. x, x, he very likely will not cover, for he will see that his K must be good on the third round, if he retains it: he will assume that the Q is backed by the Kn; and it will not seem to him that the de clarer is playing like a schoolboy on holiday.
