SOME CHARMING EVENING A SALE AND A PROMISE.
FROCKS,
Men, they say, were deceivers ever, perhaps that is why (since many of the most important design ers of women's clothes are men) the new styles are so deceitful. That artful simplicity-just a few tucks. a godet or so, insertions and ea gustations, how easy they look, and cut how exceedingly complicated they are.
Madame Sarrault is starting à sale today, a wonderful sale in which everything-day and evening frocks, hats and cloaks, are reduced to the lowest possible figure, some nsiderably lower than you would consider possible.
But that is not all. Madame is setting out next month for Paris and will not be back until Septem- ber. She is leaving No. 10, Ice Our grandmothers who liked the House Street, in capable hands and money they spent on dress to be business will be carried on as usual obrious would think the new frocks there, though her customers will which Paris bas seat to Pamelasmisa Madame's delightful presence. very poor bargains, for most of them have an trimming in what i used to be the accepted meaning of the word. STOCK TAKING.
SHAWLS, SILK AND A ́SALE.
Stocktaking "the worst job of all the year" is in progress in nearly dll the business houses. Stock- taking to the mere outsider seems as curious a fad as spring cleaning seems to a man, but it is as sadly necessary!
The only consolation" for both harassed assistants, and purchasers who are apt to feel they have come in at an inopportune moment no matter how politely they are wel comed, is that stocktaking means that the new goods for summer have arrived. There are tempting cases in the back ground which will be open- ed before March 1st, when we shall be invited to inspect the contents. Happily, though even the heads of business have their weaknesses, and already there are a few new things displayed.
Eaffa Sunshades. Whiteaway, Laidlaw's promise us a very good selection of hats and trocks, and the latest designs in cotton piece goods. Upstairs, in the household furnishing department, we may expected lovely new cretonnes among other things. Some really charming sunshades seem to have slipped out of one of the new cases already, they come from Italy and
are made of, woven raffia decorated with gay raffin flowers.
A Good Opportunity.
The sale at the Sign of the intern of winter and early spring hate and frocks, all offered at 33 per cent. discount is still on. I know of at least two women who were delighted with the several pur- chases they made there a day or two ago.

A Now Material."
In the Pioneer Silk Store I found a new material silk Tobralco, which is really a mixture of silk and the famous Tobralco cotton in the familiar weave. It should, I think, be an excellent material for under- or children's garments A very large collection of shawls waa accumulated here for the two tourist ships a fortnight ago, and I noticed that they have several in all white or black and white which are parti- cularly smart.
White Silks.
In Poboomull's I was most in- terested in a selection of white and tussore silks for early spring and summer frocks. There is a really beavy Anely woven Shanghai silk for only $2.50, a yard, and, a new ailk marble crêpe" which has a satiny surface and a gabardice these, of course, there are crépe de a little cheaper. - Watson's and Beauty,
I wonder if you are one of the few who have not yet succumed to
Arden! If so let me persuade you the tempting products of Elizabeth
to join the band of happier women who do use her preparations. I must confess that I felt doubtful,if | any toilet preparations did even half what they professed to do. I tried one or two when the wrinkles seemed to be making a special offen. sive, but the cffect was so negligible
hardly to merit the effort in volved. Then one day I got three Elizabeth Arden preparations, and I am, how an enthusiast. Three days' use was sufficient to show me that here at least the quest of beauty was not to be in vain, 1 noticed a softer freeber complexion and the wrinkles were far less pro- minent
Of course, Ardea preparations åre not cheap to buy; good things never · are, but they are cheap to use for they go a very long way and do, very good work. Watson's are tho.

Don't mistake the cultivation of loveliness for wake-up. They are miles apart! It is wisdom, of course, to make subtie use of fine vollet accessorice to enhance and accent the features and the natural colouring. But it is tragic to try to hide blemishes with cosmetics, for each year you will grow more depen dent on those artificial means of amoealing the ravages of your unwisdom.
