CRICKET NOTES.

SECOND DIVISION SHIELD -WON

The outstanding, and indeed I be lieve the only, League game played on Saturday fast was that which took place. between the two lead ing sides in the Junior Division. The University visited the Club de Recreio at King's Park, and, for all that they were playing on &, strange wicket, decisively defeated the home side. It was not a big score match. I rather think that the real strength in the Varsity Second Gen in the fact that they have at least four reliable bowlers, The batting of Recreio-barring R. C. Reed, who used to be quite useful for Craigengower in the First League a spar or two are broke down utterly. The Univer Nity, though at good, did not collapse 37 easily,

And there I think you have the secret of the University's success. They are a collection of eleven level players and do not depend on two or three stars for their wins Stars have a horrible habit of falling decasionally and they bring their

particular section of the heavens down with them. A steady level of usefulness is the ideal, pro vided that the level is high enough.

Congratulations.

I am particularly glad that the University Second XI. have won the Shield. Definitely, this is not because, unless a moment of sanity supervenes, they will ascend to the First Division next season. I could wish them nothing worse. But I know full well I am but a voice erring in the wilderness, and that the What I have written, I have written attitude of thorn comic interludes called League Meetings will hardly rescind their previous decision on the strength of the miserable fiasco it caused in the season 1097-1928,

the Recreio apparently. AS VERY REV. A. SWANN BEATEN. matter of fact their position as very probable, runners-up in the Second Division is a meritorious one considering that they are quita a new team. Where they fail is, I suspect, that they are not a well balanced side. Their batting, apart from Reed and H. A. Alves, is not too sound, and they have not the level range of bowling that Univer. Bity enn command. But, for a new side, they are keen and good. They may well make the First Division in a season ar two. Their funda- metal trouble is I think the one on which I touched last week in speaking of school cricket. They have any amount of useful bats which just lack that last year's polish of good coaching which turns them from, mediocre players into dangerous men.

They need

not be discouraged, however, for it is a trouble which affects seventy- five per cent. of the cricketers in League cricket out here. And I take leave to think that they enjoy and are keen on their cricket just as much as any one else. And this after all is the main point.

"To-morrow's Gamed.

While I don't want to be quoted

as an axeurate authority I have gathered that the only First League

match to-morrow is that between

in every way. More able pens, than mine have described it academical- ly. It is the 'one show-at all events in South China-that pre- sents a sound University Education proceeding steadily year after year. Its Faculties are notable. Bat it has one great disability. When I sailed into Victoria harbour in 1901 a chap pointed up the hill-side and said to me:-"Seo. that big build- ing? It's Lugard's Folly Lugard is a big enough Empire man and the University has proved itself enough for me to tell the story. The point is that at its inception the University was regarded as a bit of a joke. And there are a lot of people to-day who have never grown out of this idea. In 18 and '17 while we respected Marley, Brayshay and the other professors, we bowlers reckoned that the butch was open when we got down to the undergraduates. And your average man judges mostly by games! Well now, you've got two undergraduate, teams. One has knocked spots out of the Second Leagus. The other is a shining light in the First Division. This is the outward sign which will make the average, man sit up and take notice of the Uni- versity. And when you once do that, you will begin to recognise that is is one of the biggest thinga in Hong Kong, And that's the sort of idea that will do a lot of good if it Alters into the brain of the average man here.

Apologies,

On reading this through. I sco I have got away from my functions as & cricket scribe. But after all, one is human and I am going to keep it in the notes. If it only Atarts are or two sensible chaps trying to prove nte a liar or doctrinaire it will be worth it, be- cause they'll learn what I have learned. Now let's get back to business.

Friendlies.

The rest of a rather depleted programme consisted of friendly matches, HKC.C., thanks to Hay- ward, Hatger and Parker as bats- men, and Lyal as a bowler, beat the RA.F. team on the Club ground. But as I see that Good- win, Lawrence, Shaw and Padró Venn were temporarily up in the oir," I should describe it as a very friendly and pleasant pick up game.

Scratch teams-" A,"-of K.C.O. and C.8.C.C. battled on the. Kaw loon ground and the Civil Service batting did itself pretty well. It is singularly inconsistent. Teddy Fincher upheld the K.C.C. against his old Club-mates and a draw re- sulted

THE GRAND NATIONAL.

WEIGHTS AND HORSES.

AN INTERNATIONAL CONTEST.

The weights published for the Grand National Steeplechase con- form very fairly with general opindon on the merits, of the lead- ing 'chasers engaged, writes "Robin. Goodfellow? in the Daily Mail."

Mr. E. A. Topham has done the business as usual very cleverly, and i bracketing Sprig and Bright's Boy at the end of the handicap the pair are treated as expected. They finished respectively first and thiril last year, and on that oc- casion Bright's Boy was conceding the winner 3.

They jumped the last fence aide by side, but Bright's Boy got beaten by Sprig'a superior speed on the flat.

The victor, through the hindrance of a loose horse, almost came down at Becher's Brook, or he probably would have scored; moro docisively.

On the other hand, Bright's Boy is two years younger than his rival, and that fact must have influenced the handicapper. Moreover, in the previous year's contest Mr. Sanford's horse gave Sprig one pound and a beating.

Bovril III, second to Sprig inst

has spring,

been attractively weighted with 1st-only 216. more. He is one of the candidates most appealing to backers, apart from the form, his owner rider, Mr. G. W. Pennington, has much improved in jockeyship. Bovril III. da also much fitter than most of his prospective opponents. He shaped satisfactorily against Vive at Leicester, and won in good style a few days ago at Birming- ham.

There is probably more danger to be encountered by the most cap- able 'chasers from loose horses than from considerations of, their rela- tive weights,

There is likely to be an unusual ly large number of runners,” and the "morit of the less worthy contingent is shown in that no fewer than 30 of the 119 entered are weighted with the minimum 7036.

Mr. Barbour's Pair.

Mr. Frank Barbour's Easter Hero has probably too much of a burthen (19st. 5H.), apart from his” questionable quality as stayer- and his stable mate Koko on that ground and with 3lb. less shoulė be preferred, albeit as far as we have seen Koko has not hitherto done well over Aintree fences.

The French horse The Coyote. (11st, 131.) is reported not to be certain to compete. At any rate no decision has at present beeu madc.

Besides The Coyote and Ace II., the French contingent includes Maguelonne, whose record last your was good. As a winner of some very important steeplechases she is reckoned the best young 'chaser on the other side of the Channel. This mare may also miss the Grand- National in favour of the Cham- pion Steeplechase decided on the following day over a shorter dies

tance.

Interest is increased by the pre- sence of several American horses, and although at first glance it may appear that Mr. Topham has dealt deniently with all the invaders, it can be taken for granted that be has been well posted as to their capabilities and their performances in their own countries. -

Jack Horzer, - à winner two seasons ago, was prevented by mishap from competing last year. When successful he carried 10st. 5., and although now naked to carry 10 pounds more, this is nul- lified to some extent by the fact that the weights are on a higher. level all round than they were two years ago.
