CASE FOR THE PROSECUTION.
The trial opened before the Chief Justice (Sir Henry Golian) at the Criminal Sessions yesterday, of the Chinese who is alleged to have taken part in the shooting affray last December Tth. This was the tragic affair in which two Chinese constables were killed and Police Sergeant T. McMahon was dangerously wounded, but recovered thanks to his excellent constitution and the skill and devotion of the Government Civil Hospital 'staff.
Another Chinese constable and an Indian constable were wound- ed while one Chinese gunman was killed, and another man wound- ed. This man, Chau Hung, who is alleged to be one of the gang was the prisoner. He is said to have been one of the lugitives in the running street fight and to have murdered one of the victims.
The alleged fourth gunman is to be charged later at this Sessions with robbery, intent to shoot, and unlawful possession of

Yesterday, the case for the Crüwn was concluded, and to-day, the defence open their case.

A fire engine from the Central Fire Station with seven-mèu “on board and two tram-cars travelling in opposite directions wern involved in a smash at the Pedder Street junction near the red beacou at about 9 o'clock yesterday morning, The fire appliance received mithor worse damage than in the accident. about a year ago, when one of the engines skidded on the wet surface near this spot, and crushed into a pillar of the Union Building.
