Another characteristic of the new gowns is the "one-sided" effect. If you were to cut one of the new frocks in two up the front, you would have two halves that differ entirely. Lelong is the most per sistent exponent of this idea. The majority of his models are asym metrie to a striking degree. They are most complicated in cut, con- sisting of numerous sections care- fully cut out and sewn together again on the lines that converge to ore hip or one shoulder.

Colour.

One of the most significant features of the winter collections is colour. The now shades are 40 soft, an attentuated, so difficult to desordic, that they excite as much interest as the models themselves. In general the colour scheme sober and quiet. There is a great deal of lack for all times of day, and many of the leading designers retain their proferrace of all Black or all while evening gowne. But there are also wonderful new "off" shades: faint sage green, digris blue, which is pale and neither grey green nor blue, pale hyacinth blue, fine and faded use tones. For evening the newest note is clear pale yellow; but it is also new to find such daytime colours as grey taupe and beige used in lovely chiffon volvets for, evening

gowns.

There are many greens, a the way from doop bottle green to the palest washed out tone, almos white. There are also many blues, especially the "middle" blues, and the light tones for evening. Then there, is Lelong's combination of the two in a shade that might be called peacock.. Brown stages revival. Paton's new colours? are three tones of brown, a beige which is darker than any we have And, more like a dead leaf colour, a middle cocon brown, and a very deep chocolate. In the midst of these soft, indefinable colours, we are startled at some houses by a note of clear red, scarlet or car- dinal, that fairly shouts among the faded shades,

At two of the tables were seated some British officers and their wires, who were waiting for a train ot take them to Bingen after ball. Singling out one woman, Feht intimated that she must put on her cloak, which she did.

Fehl's behaviour caused some, what of a sensation, and a wowd gathered round the tables where the British were sented and began to pass remarks. One of the British officers, thereupon ordered Fehl to leave the room, and later he was arrested and charged with insulting four British officers by failing to sulate and with inanit- ing the families of British officers.

'In sentencing Fehl (whose name means literally "error") the Court Expressed the opinion that he was not a fit persen to perform rail- way police duties-Reuter.
