WHERE TO SHOP IN HONG KONG.

ADVICE TO OUR VISITORS OF THE "BELGENLAND " AND "EMPRESS OF AUSTRALIA."

||

All over the world the traveller, entering a new port, experi ences the same difficulty of want of knowledge of the best shops in which, to purchase those precious momentoes of his or her voyage. There is so much to see and do in the course of a few days, that the visitor is often tempted by the first shop, and all too often regrets, when too late, that she has not gone further nfeld.

.

Knowledge of local conditions and, of the Chinese language, may make back street" shopping worth while to the old resident or very experienced traveller; but there is ho" disguising that when a round-the-world liner is in harbour a keen eye is watchful for a strange face, and it is just these "back street" shops which are most on the look out of "sapa." The bigger firms mentioned on this page have built up a reputation for fair dealing over a number of years, and it is not in their interest to jeopardise that reputa- tion for the sake of a few dollars.

I have, therefore, on this page tried to give you some indien- tion of the type of goods which you can find at the various shops · mentipaed, and can assure yol that you will receive courteous treatment and a square'den at all of them.

"A MOST FASCINATING

SHOP."

THE SIGN OF THE LANTERN,

I heard about The Sign, of the | Lantern in Chater Road, long before I reached Hong Kong, "A most fascinating shop," I was told, "which" you will never exhaust." Of course, residents in the Colony need no introduction to this tron- sure house, but possibly some of our visitors this week may not have had the recommendation I received. It would take more space than I Am allowed to tell you about a hundredth part of the delightful things that can be found there, but I should doubt if even the hardest headed business man in the world could go inside and come. out with his bank roll intact, and certainly no visiter in search of a momento of the East would want to do so. Blackwood furniture, old and new, Incquer, porcelain, rugs, oriental embroideries, and jewellery, make a setting for in- numerable lovely trifles, some rare and valuable and others which can be secured for a dollar or so.

A couple of lovely, genuinely old, mardarin coats attracted my atten tion yesterday.
