The new legat year, says the London Observer, promises to be a

Any student of physiognomy "can requirements of the time. Litiga
tell man's profession by watch- flon is everywhere on the up grade, ing his face intently and divorce causes alone for 1927 net apply only to modern men. The occupations of men who have attained to the total of proximately 4,000 a fair proportion died long ago can be read from
their portrait of these being heard at the county in Assizes. In the High Court Londen the causes Eated for the four terms of the past year in all divisions have exceeded 8,000, and the problem of assuring to litigants generally a fairly quick hearing is engaging the close attention of those in authority in the legal departments.

A strong body of opinion in the country is pressing for wide and far-reaching divorce reform, which can only have the effect of increas ing the burdens on the courts. Since the passing of the Act of Major Entwistle, by which martini misconduct was made a ground for divorce by either husband or wife, the total of divorce suits has leap ed upwards, as well as the ratio presented by wives, and the country assizes have been prolonged largely because of the stress of matrimonial cises. Under this system, divorce business comes within the prevince of the Judges of the King's. Brach Division, several of whom have been very outspoken in regard to the serious state of affairs reflect ed by the divorce rush. Mr. Justice Svift, at the Inst Birmingham Assizes, observed that."if the pub I knew what is going on and what is being done in this court there would very quickly be some reform of the Divorce Court
People seem to be breaking up their family life very calmly."
The New Publicity System. The Judicial Proceedings Act, under which the reporting of divorce cases by the newspapers is restricted, has now been in opera tion for over a year, and while in some instances the lack of the deterrent of publicity may have influenced the conduct of certain people, it is to be noted that as a rule the Judges where in their view the publication of facts and Information is to the public advan tage-have taken special steps to give detailed judgments in a man- ner rendering euch publicity pos sible.
It is being urged that the machin. ery for dealing with divores, and especially the undefended cases which form the great majority, might be strengthened by dele gating such work more to Commis sioners, Recorders and experienced counsel who can deputise as Judges. County Court jurisdiction has been suggested, but these courts are everywhere crowded with work.
Curtail The Long Vacation? In London the matrimonial work is still strangely merged in "the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division," with actions regarding
A look round the walls of the National Portrait Gallery, will show that the faces of the women at the past cannot be read like that, for their expressions were curiously standardised They ap pear to combine a sense of humour with great resources of natural wisdom.
Once more look into the room
where the lending women in the different professions are gathered. No two expressions are alike. Their thoughts, redeting to their particular subject, have changed their faces.
