4.40 8.1.

The first indication of anything wrong occurred at 7.55 pm. ca Tuesday night when smoke was observed · emerging from the after hold. The captain and officers were informed and the hold was made airtight by tarpaulins and steam was injected. The situation was particularly critical inasmuch as the ship carried 1,500 passengers and the outcome of a serious fire on board can better be imagined than described, However, nothing serious happened and the vessel anchor.

at Woosung at Messages were sent to the Harbour Master and the vessel proceeded up river and moored at 7.05 a.m. at the Ningpo-Shaoshing Wharf situnt- next to the China Merchants Wharf at the junction of the French Band and Chinese Bund. Her the -passcugers" were quickly disembark- rd, the tarpaulins taken off the hold and water pumped by the ship, the Dragon Fire Float, the French Brigade, and the Central Fire Brigade, S.M.C. The fire occurred in natives bales of raw cotton, of which there were 1,150, and the smoke and fumes were such that several firemen including Chief Officer Dyson, Shanghai Fire Brig ade, were overcome and had to The receive medical attention. cause of the fire was probably spontaneous combustion and the whole of the cargo of cotton auffer ed from water damage. We under. stand that the shipment is covered by insurance and that there was little or no damage to the ship. Y.. Daily News,"

The proprietor of café in the Offers neighbourhood reported that two men had entered his establishment and naked excitedly whether they could wash their hands; which were extremely dirty. It was "thought they might be the brutes who had attacked the defenceless.Fräulein Hohmann

A new and startling chapter of this story of crime appeared in the

afternoon.

Fräulein newspapers. Hohmann had been questioned by

the police, whose questioning-be- cause her pretty head showed no scar or bump-was so drastic that Fräulein Hohmann broke down un- der it and confessed that her story. which had shocked and alarmed Berlin, was fiction.

A Plan And à Man She had set the office on fire ber-1 self and cut the telephone wires. The reason she gave was that she had loaned £50 of the money in her charge to a friend, who had died before repaying her, and that she' had to devise a plan to conceal the deficiency.

The story of the dead friend is hardly convincing, and a fact on which attention has been riveted is that a man visted Fräulein Hoh mann in her ofice at 7 o'clock in the evmming.
