AUSTRALIAN SHIPPING.

SIR A ANDERSON'S VIEWS.

LONDON.

Sir Alan Anderson, presiding at a meeting of the Orient Stean Navigation Company, said he had little that was pleasant to remark about the cargo trade. The Orient steners In 20 despatches to Australia bad carried 4,000 tons more than the 17 despatches of last year, but the number and capacity of the steamers bcribed by all lines this year was far beyond the needs

of the trade.

antique articles of modern factory production, but bearing authentie markings indicating considerable age and manufacture by famous silversmiths.?

The head of a London firm of silver valuers explained to a Daily Mail reporter the circumstances in which the deception is possible. He said:

Many of the pieces of old silver now reaching the market have lost much of the valus they would otherwise hare possessed becane their gure has been neglected or they have beep chipped and had parts broken. These articles can be required cheaply, and a large number have been bought by men who can use them skilfully for fraudulent purposes.

Test That Falls, These men are somehow able to gain an intimate association with the antique trade and there- ly come to know that certain collectors are on the look out for particular classes and specimens of old silver. They frat acquire modern and comparatively inex pensive copies of the antique ware which is being pearched for. and then take steps to lend the prospective buyers to believe that they posses the articles wanted.

In every case the silver offered bears the genuine stamping of an old date of manufacture, the hall mark, and the staker's mark. This is achieved by cutting out the marks from period ailver and, with hard soldering and hammer ing up, fitting them into the new
