LowDox, January 14th. The trik of the week in London has been the great flood-which over flowed from the Thames along the banks from Putney down to Won- wich. At several points breaches were made in the river "embank. ments and people were trapped while sleeping in basement rooms. In all fourteen lives were lont. At the Tate Gallery a large number of Turner drawings were damaged, Further down the Thames ware- houses wrie flooded and a vast amount of merchandise was render ed useless. Those are the essential facts; but it would be impossible to convey any adequate idea of the tell of suffering represented by the on-rush of the waters which took. people unawares.
The disaster was due to a com- bination of factors. The Thames was swollen with melted snow and heavy rains, and there was an extra- ordinary high tide, and a gale from the North-West. The river rushing down in spate met the tide, the water was banked up by the wind, and the result was a flood bigger than anything of the kind in living themory. The level of the river was six feet higher than at an ordinary high tide, and thus we had it bursting the embankment and creat- ing havoc.
