THE LATE MR. THOMAS HARDY.
[FROM YOUR OWN, CORRESPONDENT. ]
LONDON, January 8th. The most talked-of person in England at the moment is Miss Elisabeth Scott, who might quote Lord Byron and say she woke up one morning and found hersel famous." She has been chosen as the architect for the new Shake Roenre Memorial Theatre at Strat- ford-on-Avon. Her design is des- cribed by the judges as "a bold and splendid conception. Miss Scott was the only woman entrant among 76 competitors in England, Canada and America, and she has the unique distinction of being the

BELGRADE, December 13th Sentences of extreme severity have been passed of ten out of the nineteen Macedonian students on trial for subversive activity. They had been accused of being members Revolutionary Macedonian 34 organisation, organised by Bulgaria, for the purpose of detaching Mace donis from the kingdom of Jugo- slavia. The heaviest sentence was that on Dimitrie Diuzelovitch, who was affirmed by the people to be the ringleader; his total sentence amounted to thirty-five years' penal servitude. ́.
The condemned sccepted their lot with comparative calm, but there were moving scenes in the court when they took farewell of those of their company who were released.

The cost as estimated by Miss Scott will be about £150,000, but it is ex: pected that the final figure will be higher than this. There is, how. ever, no stint of money. Subscrip tions have been received from all parts of the world, including the United States, which contributed most handsomely. The new theatre is to provide accommodation for one thousand persons.
Mr. George Bernard Shaw, who was one of the Assessors who chose the winning design states they selected" the only possible design and a very good one." He adds that as a man connected with the theatre he was impressed by the fact that although the architect was woman, in his opinion hers. was the only plan which showed any theatre

The most unfortunate bg is that his elders take him a sorpusly as he takes himself. Inate of being an overgrown schoolboy mature, he becomes a man who, cause he is young, knows better than body else.. and ceme student, is nog wakketten ideals. It is but a short step, for those with ideas, to revolutionary work. Serbia, however, is at least free from the bane of some other East European countries such as Roumania, where, in place of the rag of French or English under- graduates, there has just been an outrageous pogrom.

The Journal Of The Trade.": The world at large hears a good deal from time to time about the great dailies of Fleet Street, but one of the most interesting in its way is the Morning Advertiser, which is published every day and circulates chiefly among people connected with the hotels and licensed houses throughout the country. It is a very old peper and all the profits go towards the upkeep of the institu- tions maintained by The Trade for the benefit of orphans and the aged And needy.
