ST. JOHN'S CATHEDRAL.

STATEMENT OF POLICY BY THE DEAN OF HONG KONG.

SUBSCRIBERS MEETING AND PEW RENTS.

"PRINCIPLE OF ALL-FREE SEATS AGREED UPON..

The annual meeting of seat-holders and subscribers of St." Jaha's Cathedral was held in the Cathedral Hall yesterday after- › noon with the Right Rev. C. R. Duppuy, D.D. (Bishop of Victoria) in the chair. A recommendation that the principle of the aboli- tion of pew rents be approved was discurred and generally sup ported, a resolution being passed to the effect that the Cathedral Ordinance and Regulations be referred to the Church Body with a view to amendment.

The most interesting feature of the meeting was a statement by the Dean, the Very Rev. Alfred Swann, D.SIG, M.A., in whichis he reviewed the line of policy he hoped to adopt with regard to the Cathedral services and Church work generally. The Dean hopes to see an increase in the number of communicants, a larger choir and a more definite policy as regards religious education for children. The abolition of pew rente received his whole-hearted support WHAT THE DEAN AIMS TO ACCOMPLISH. In addressing the meeting,

Dean said:-

Rewording Of Cathedral Ordinance" Necessary.

If that principle is approved there will, accessarily follow some reword- ing of the Cathedral Ordinance and Cathedral Regulations. This would}' be the work, of the Church Body primarily who would then refer their conclusion for another general meeting. After which the sanction of the Colonial Office would be re quired. The annual meeting would. no longer be a meeting of the sent holders and subscribers, and it would be necessary to decide who should constitute that meeting. For my part I should like to see in exist- ence an Electoral Roll somewhat similar to those which came into operation at home under the Enabling Act. I think that our pre-

sent financial qualification.is.not-a good one. It tends to narrow the interest taken in the Church's affairs and again to foster some exclusive. ness. The new Church Body will go into, this matter quite soon, if an I hope their recommendation to- night is approved, "
