TO-MORROW'S ATTRACTIVE

· PROGRAMME.

[DY RAPIER.]

The Gymkhanarranged by that fine sporting regiment The. K.OS.B.'s at Kwanti to-morrow (Sunday) commences at 2.43 pm: There is a special train leaving Kowloon at 1.13 and the usual transport facilities to and from the Cours will be available.

The programme is an attractive one, consisting of aine events. The first is a team race of four from each Company, bareback on mules and there are six teams entered. No two is the Subaltern's Cup and I expect Mr. Shillington to annex this. There are 19 entries for hitting the polo ball and Mr. Walch should prove the winner. The fourth race is for China ponies and Curiare, James Pigg and Sunuing should fill the places The Afth event is bending race for ladies and there-are-17 entrants-divided into three heats. This is a record for Hong Kong No. six, is to my mind the pièce de résistance. It is the mule Derby, There are 30 entries and, as very little is known about the merits of either animals or, riders, the "pari" offers an opportunity for a zeal gamble. No. seven is for pories, the property of Officers, of the regiment (Owner ridden), and I expect Colonel Comyn will start as favourite. The last event is The Foxhunters Cup for China ponies with owner up, and Pollock will carry my money.

It is a heavy and an ambitious programme, and there will not be much time to spare in running off the different events. Competitors should make themselves fully con- versant with the conditions of the races in which they are participat ing and thus avoid that amahless and boyless feeling that gives rise to panecessary questions and causes iraibility in official circles.

There will be a $5 and a $1 cash wrep. The charge for admission to the public is only 81 and motor cars may be parked free.

Quickly a line appears, the motor-launch Sir E. E. Conners made fast, and up to the deck of the steamer clambere the river chaplain, the Rev. WC. Bown, dressed in oilskins, gurm boote, yachtman's cap, and a clerical col- lar. The river diaplain is calling on his parishioners.

The Skipper Parson is the nick: name given by sailors to this breezy cheery chaplain, whose parish, apart from some 15,000 people

in and around Tilbury Docks, consists of 35 miles of the. Dames between Greenhithe and the Nore lightship. Every day at the wheel of his launch he is to be sean calling on phips lying in the river.

Once a week he visits the powder magazines anchored in the Thames, isolated from all shipping, and takes the crew a parcel of news pepers and books. But in never gives out tracta. He said

I never touch tracts. I don't fike them. I take good, manly books to the men: The modern asilor is a fire mar and he is intellectual nowadays; in fact, A new type 14 coming into exis- teaco. We don't worry him
