FUNERAL OF MR HUGH CONWAY.

A story

of vindictiveness and treachery lies behind the pirating of the ss. "Son Yan Hui on Tuesday morning.

It will be remembered that about two months ago, there was a dispute between the Kongmoon Seamen's „Unpon and 'the Cintor Union, andas'a result of this, several of the crews of West River bents were dismissed. Theisę, discharged from the Sain Nam Hài kware, vengeance on the Compradore and his nephew.. Informa

was indeed given to the Chuapradere by the Chief of Police at Kengmoon that the dismissed crew "had allied theimelves with pirates and would carry out an attack on the Sun. Som Hui Lefore the Chinese New Year,

This warning was borne out after the vessel had left Pakkai on Tuesday morning. When only After thinutes out of port. na fewer than thirty men, who had boarded as passengers at Pakkal, made an attempt to seize' the ship. They looked fo the Compras deme lind the superintendent, but these two men on, aring their aames being shouted hid themselves." In the shooting affray which followed, two Indian guards and the Chief Officer," Mr. „Hugh “ Coaway, were killed. Another two Indiän quarks wäre wounded,

The pirates inade a desperate attempt to size the ship and They would have succeeded had it not been for the determined resistance put up" by Captain) W. H. Sparke and Mr. M. F. Hough- ton, chief engineer of the vessel.

The attackers were held at bay by these two officers who had retreated behind the grilles and amoured doors protecting the bridge. These had been closed on the port side, thanks to 'the presence of mind and indiffereuse to danger slown by Mr. Hough- ton A Bitle later, while the Captain covered the crying out of the risky job with his automatic, the Chief Engineer closed the imilar grille and door on the starboard side. Behind this citadel the two intrepid defenders kept the whole gang at bay, at the eame, tie navigating the ship, whose engines were pounding chens all through the crisis.

ARRESTED, SHOT OR DROWNED.

The gang of ruffins soon lost heart and jumped overboard 'making for a couple of sampans, evidently manned by, confeder- nies, which were following the ship. The helm was put over and a steady fire was maintained at the scurrying gang, whose losses in the fight were put at seven killed by bullets and four drowned. But considerably worse was in store for the survivors. The sound of the fring and the noise of the Sun Norm Hi'a steam sirea had brought a party of Merchant Volunteers to the foreshore. These. arrested fifteen of the pirates as they landed and the last eeen of them from the ship was their being marched off manacled and under, arlequate gunid. "

After the gang had left the ship, the San Xam. Hai steuined to Kamichuk, sounding her siren in the hope of summoning help. HMS. Faulkner came in response to their signals and an arined party were placed, on board, and first aid was rendered by the Comunander and men of the British warship.

High tribute was paid by Captain Sparke to Mr. M. F. tough. tos for the bravery shown by him under a meet terrible ordeal.
