[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ]

Losos, December 15th. There has been good deal of speculation Since it was announeed some weeks ago that Major-General Duncan was returning to England in the New Year. It was thought "that having been in Shanghai for) a twelve-month or thereabouts the Government desired to see him res garding the future of the Defence Farer. The main point of interest is how long the Force will be r quierd in China. Some think the period may run into years, but there is nobody who desires to see the tops withdrawn until the pos- sibility of danger is over and past. In the meantime there is the official announcement this werk that General Duncan is coming home for good, having been appointed General Officer Commanding the 1st Division in sucression to Lient.- feneral Sir C. F. Romer, who has been trompted. Major-General A. E: Wardrop, who succeeds to the command in China in succession to Genreil Duncan, was an artillery man until he took over the command of the troops in the Labore district in India. He was one of the most successful artillery enmmanders that the Great War produced, and is n noted big game hunter.

It may interest anma to learn that he is also a strict disciplinarian, whose high senze of justice and fair play have made him extremely successful in dealing with Orientals throughout his long experience in the East. Like General Duncan, he hails from Aberdern.

IDENTITY OF THE FOX."

WHY HE MURDERED MARIAN PARKER.

TRIME OF A BOY BANK CLERK.

NEW YORK, Dre 23th. The Fox, the criminal who killed the twelve-year-old girl | Marian Parker, in Los Angeles, | and delivered her mutilated body when her father paid £200 rapsóm, has been identified 13 Edward Hickman, aged seventeen, a former bank clerk.

Search for him has extended'half- way acress the continent but the Authorities are confident that he is still within the city boundaries. | is reported that he was seen to-day in a garage in the business district.

Motive,

It is stated that revenge was the motive for "the crime. Hickman was formerly employed in the bank

where Mr. Parker has an executive position. Hickman was convicted of forry Inst summer, but was re leased on parul despite strong made by Mr. Parker, protests Hickman is described as unusually intelligent and highly nervous

No attempt has yet been made to carry cut the shrent to kidnap Marian's twin sister Marjorie.'

Hickman's home is in Kansas City, and the police are watching for any attempt he may make to visit relatives there."

A rumour that the murderer had. been arrested caused a great minh to gather round the suburban police station last night. The an thorities, fearing an attempt at summary justice, took the precau tion of pincing a heavy guard round the county gaol.

Pictures of Hickman taken in the summer have been identified by five persons as portraits of the wanted man.

One of the five is the teacher

who permitted Marian Parker to leave school with him on Thursday. The League Of Mercy..
