THE ARMY OF THE FRIGHT FOR LORD
FUTURE.
WHOLE SYSTEM IN THE BALANCE.
EXPERTS STUDYING RECENT MANOEUVRES.
The members of the Army Coun- gat are considering the report of the experimental tests made with the newly organited" armoured mobile column which was got to gether on Salisbury Plain and made to operate during this sea son's" training.
The Army at the moment is in a Rate of dus. Instead of one, pro- klem having to be settled, there are many, and the instructive ex- ploits of the experimental force tended to their uraltiplication.
The principal problem is one of fuae. Hence
the authorities have to tread warily in the matter of effecting important changes in the equipment of units. Happily General Sir George Milne, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, has definite views on the question, of the character of the Army that we need. At the same time he is not prepared to recommend changes until he has satisfied himself that the time is ripe for such change and that as no time will there be any serious desire to return to the
old order of things, a military correspondent informs the Murning l'est.
Domestic Problems,
The mechanization of Artillery Brigades, and the multiplication of machine gun battalions will com. pletely alter our existing system of Army organization. The military authorities in India are not en- amoured of Dragon-drawn Artil lery, and it obviously does not make for efficiency to have a me chanized Brigade sent from this country to India, where it would be turned again into horse-drawn artillery.

DIARY OF EVENTS.
To-day.
Annual Distribution of Prizes as Queen's College by H.E. the Governor (Sir Cecil Clementi, K.C.M.G.), 11 am.
Second Round of U.S.R.C. Tennis Tournament (open events) to be completed.
Six hundred cheering women and 900 babies and chinken greeted the Earl of Baltoho, at 19, is a genial bachelor-when he paid Edward Hotel, visit to the Mile End Women's Social Club, which meete every
Tursday afternoon in the Beaumont Hall, Beaumont-square, Stepnes. E., to fraternise, talk about each other's babies, and sing songs.
When Lord Balfour arrived he saw rows of perambulators and push-chairs, and from upstairs come the sound of 000 lusty voices sing. ing I've been working on the rail- was." The women sang until Lord Balfour appeared on the platform, and then they stopped and cheered. Grandmothers of s0, mothers, and young women out of work waved Union Jacks and blew kisses, Babies were ifted in the air and children can about the hall shout-
ing.
Lord Balfour was "introduced to the Rev. J. Cryer, vicar of St. Benet's Church, Mile End-road: Father O'Sullivan, of St. Mary's Reman Catholic Church, Under wood-street; and the Rev. B. N. Michelson, of the United Synagogue Welfare Committed, who were sit cing together on the platform.
What shall we sing called out the Hon. Mre. Lionel Guest, president of the club.
"By the light of the Free" came from hundreds of throats. The piano struck up, and Lord Balfour heard singing such as he can rarey have heard before.
Then Lord Balfour spoke to them, while dozens of babies were crying and othere laughing and screaming. A chorus of baby shrieks is the usual accompaniment to the weekly meetings of this club, but the mem hers do not mind, and neither did Lord Balfour.
