THE MARINE COURT'S
CASE,
WATER POLICE SERGEANT NOT DISMAYED.
Yesterday
the Marine
Court
heard its first case of the year, Goldsmith; who and
Sergeant brought the charge against the master of a steam launch (reported elsewhere), was looked upon with sympathetic eyes by the Chinese staff of the Harbour Office.
This aroused the curiosity of Daily Press representative and on making enquiries, it was learned that the sergeant who brought the first case to the Marine Court in 1997 is no longer living. The Chi- nese regard it as a coincidence that the first case to come before thei Marine Magistrate this year was are brought forward by a sergeant and only two days later than the case heard last year.
It will be remembered that Ser- geant F. A. Herbert shot himself in his own room, at the Water Police Station sometime in March be who last year, and it REA brought the first case to the Marine" Court for 1997. The inference was therefore obvious,

To Sergeant Goldsmith himself, the matter was a huge joke. He jacularly told our representative that although it fell to his lot to bring the Brst cuse to the Marine Court, he felt sure that he would not have the courage to shoot bir- self, and believe what the Chinesë may, he would take good care that HONG KONG METEOROLOGICAL the coincidence will bring him Kung Hi Fat Choy (happy New Year).

The chief factor controlling the purity of the air over a great city is the wind. When the wind drops to one or two miles an hour smoke cannot escape, and collects in a heavy pail, shutting out light. Usually, during a widespread water fog, the temperature does not fol low the ordinary course of falling Fri. regularly as the height above the ground increases, but begins to rise again after a certain height is reached.
