Optional Cargo will not be landed here, aniowe Notice has been given

prior to Steamer's arrival, but carried an from port to port to the final port of call to which toe option extends

a century-old vigil will thus bere hamsby notified that the Cargo will ended. The North-West Lightship has been served by the master, an engineer, a lamp trimmer and three seamen. Their duties have been to see that the light is burn- ing correctly, make the regulation fog signals when required, enter in their leg particulars of all ships passing in and out of Liverpool, watch for vessels in distress, and maintain the position of the light ship. She is to be replaced by a lighted bell beacon 35 feet high with an unattended Jight of 300 candle power, having a quick flash every second, visible for eight niles. Thus one of the links with the earlier days of the port will have been severed and ships which pass will miss that human touch conveyed by the crew of the North- West Lightship.

The Mersey Docks and Harbour Board have decided to fit the Bar Lightship with a new invention, the wireless beacon, capable of giv ing directions to ships over a range ot fifty miles and at the same time enable them to abolish the North- West Lightship.

All broken, abafed sad damaged Goods are to be loft in the Godowns, where they will be examined on any Tuesdays and Fridays between the hours of 10.45 A.M. and Noor within the Free Storage period.

No Claima will be admitted after the Goods have left the Steamer's Godown, and all Goode remaining undelivered after 1st December, will be subject to Rent

The North-West Lightships have had stirring experiences in peace and war time. During the earlier part of the Great War, German having arrived from REEMEN, HAM- submarines used the lightship as BURG and Forte, Consignees of Dargo a rendezvous, and often at night are hereby notified that their Cargo is the crew could make out! the U-being landed at their risk into the Go boats moving about on the surface The recharging their batteries. watch below, too, as they lay in their bunks, would hear the vib rant thud of the engines of the enemy submarines lurking around the lightship waiting for their prey. The crew of the lightship

Damaged Packages must be left in the had instructions not to disturb the submarines, as a lightship which Godown for examination by the Cen- had done so of another part at sigases and the Company's Surveyors, the coast had been promptly tor-Mours. Anderson & Ashe, at 10 am,

The Admiralty, however, eventual- ly decided that the lightship must be withdrawn, and under cover of a dark misty night and with great secrecy she was taken into Liver pool and only replaced after the Armistice.

The Bar Lightship has had to be renewed on several occasions. On a perfectly fine afternoon in early 1914 she was cut nearly in two by the Elder

steamer and Fyfe Pacurate, but fortunately all the crew were on deck at the izoment of the collision and, they escaped in their two lifeboats. The light ship sank and was never, raised. During the winter gales when the vessel swings at the turn of tide great care has to be taken not to take a heavy wea on the broadside or the mast might be pulled out, The crew on or she might fill. these trying occasions make skilful use of a try-sail to keep their ship head on. The lightship is moored with 135 fathoms of chnip for the NW. "leg" and 190 fathoms for the S.E.leg." Her two anchors weigh 3 tons. In addition to her syren she has a submarine fog bell the sound of which carries under water and can be picked up by ships fitted with a suitable recer ing apparatus 12 to 16 miles away. -Nautical Magasing;
