A £50 SHIP.
TWO DEAD IN EXPLOSION.
DYING MAN ASKS FOR A CIGARETTE.
LONDON, Nov. 18th. The story of an explosion in a 61-years-old ship which had been bought for £50 was told at an in- quest at Grimsby on the bodies of George Edward Gaunt and Henry Cook, engineers, who were killed in the steam fishing vessel Bessie off Spurn Head.
Mr. Henry Ibbotson said he wAS owner and master of the Bessie. She had been laid up some months and he bought her as she stood for £30. He spent about £100 in re- fitting her. This included some repairs to the boiler, including re- The man tubing and welding. who did this work told him that the boiler was good for some years, and he (Mr. Ibbotson) did not have the boiler surveyed and pass- ed by the Board of Trade.
Last Tuesday the ship started en
a fishing voyage in the North Sea When of Spurn Head Chief En ginger Gaunt asked him to lay the aip to while the engineers attend ed to the boiler, which was not steaming properly. While the en- gineers were busy in the engine- room there was a report like a gun and clouds of steam and cries of pain came from the room.
Gaunt Dragged Out. Ha
tried (the skipper) descend but could not because of t steam and scalding water. He then wrenched open the engine room skylight" and through it dragged Gaunt, who was badly scalded about the head and face. He tried again to get below but was forced back, and as Cook's cries had ceased he gave up the attempt and fired flares to attract help. The Spurn lifeboat even- tually reached the ship.
