inhabitants. Only, about one-fifthachaon, Dec. 17th. of the ancient city has been brought to light and work is still It contains continuing there. theatres, temples, baths, public buildings, and private residences built on a magnificent scale.
First Labour Exchanges. Of far greater interest than these edifices, magnificent as they are, is the inkling Ostia affords us of the maritime And commercial or ganisation of Imperial Rome. We so the Square of the Corpora- cioas" a kind of Chamber of Com- merce, under the columns of which were the schole," or seats of the various corporations or guilds: the shops where dealers in tow, ropes, skins, and so forth offered their wares; the labour exchange, where sailors were hired, and the seats of representatives of other maritime cities.
The recovery of the ships of Tiberius is perhaps the boldest ar- chæological project ever conceived. lt is believed that Emperor Tiberius-archaeologists now state it was not Tiberius but Caligula -built two floating palaces on Lake Nemi near Rome. They con tained priceless objects of art.
4
They were both sunk-it is not known bow or why-near the shore ins depth of water of about 80 "feet. Various attempts to salve them have been made at different times and some of these attempts were partly successful-which is a pity, because they injured the ships without recovering anything of real outstanding merit.
Lake Above Laka. Signon Mussolini last year de cided that the ships are to be re- foxted. A plan was devised to empty Lake Nemi to permit the ships being reached. This is ren- dered possible by the fact that alongside Lake Nemi. but at a lower level and separated from it by a mountain, is another and much larger lake, the Lake of Albano..
By digging a tunnel from the bottom of Lake Nemi to the Lake of Albano it will be possible to pour the water of the former into The redundant water the latter. will be disposed of by means of a tunnel leading out of the Lake of Albano, which was built by the Romans and needs but to be suit nbly enlarged

THE BROTHERHOOD OF MAN.
SATIRIC PICTURE BY THE HON, JOHN COLLIER.
"It is a perfectly straightfor. ward painting," said the Hon. John Collier, in reply to the criticism that in his latest picture, "The Brotherhood of Man," he was being deliberately mystifying. It shows a gathering of Anar- chista round table. There are coarse-looking ruffians, intellectual extremists; a smartly turned out youngster, and an old wom&T.
"The picture," said Mr. Collier, is certainly a political satire, but I disagree entirely that for that reason it cannot be a painting
