SINGAPORE SECRET
SOCIETIES.. HANDKERCHIEF AS MEMBER- SHIP CERTIFICATE,
SINGAPORE, December 3rd. Interesting evidence by Mr. J. A. Binck, Protector of Chinese, Singa pore, in a District Court case re vealed that the signs whereby the unlawful Triad Society members know each other are not greatly dis similar to those used by members of a much larger secret organisation, The case was one in which two Chinese were charged with being members of a Triad Society.
Mr. Black declared that the way in which a person took up a tea cup revealed the fact that he was a member. The manner in which the cup was taken up depended on the way in which the cups were arrang- ed on the tray on which tea was served to, a visitor.
A handkerchief produced as an exhibit was handed the witness.
"This handkerchief," said Mr. Black, is a membership certi- ficate."
Local estate is valued at 89,000, and everything is left on trust to be invested for the equal benefit of three children as they each at- tain the age of 21 years.

NAVY SOUVENIR.
How the Emperor Karl, when a prisoner on board a British war- ship, wrote out his parole not to attempt to escape is one of the most the interesting disclosures, by Austrian doctor, Dr. Erich John, from the private diary, placed at his disposal by the late Admiral Troubridge.
The admiral was commander of the British gunboats on the Danube SOVET yours ago, when Empero Kar and the Empress Zita, prisoners, made their journey to Madeira. The diary entry says:-
"I realised the manly bearing of the ex-Emperor under the most painful conditions. It was the 1st of November. The British gunbont Glowworm, a quarter of an hour before dawn, with engines shut off so as not to attract attention, pasa ed under the bridge over the
