The commercial section of the Manchester Guardian says that "many people live in a fool's paradise, believing that Lanca shire's future lies" in the expan sion of the finer end of the trade and the production of Eigh class novelties. If this is the sole future, then it will be the future of a Lancashire with perhaps" hall its present industrial "plant.”

The section of the trade which in attempting to counteract the national pessimism with regard to textiler js advertising that Britain's textile predominance is still the wonder of the world, as the country has exported £500,000,000 worth of textiles since the beginning of 1924..

The Times declares that Lanca- shire's fate will be, one of two al ternatives: either a converted and considered reorganization of the textile trade or the survival of the fitter through unrestricted petition. This means that the ills in difficulties, numbering about 100, will go bankrupt and that some of the owns concerned will perish. Others will survive. but in weakened condition. The narrow individuaEst mentality of Lancashire may make this inevit able.

MURDER BY MISTAKE?

A. BROTHER'S DEATH.

ALLAHABAD,

A murder committed in mistake and under peculiar circumstances has come to light in the Sialloot district of Punjab, és miles north- east of Lahore.

During the last cattle fair three brothers, it is alleged, conspired in rob a merchant who came to their well to drink water. Having received him with hospitality, ther offered to accommodate him for the night.

said:

I set off yesterday afternoon with Geoffrey Crawley, whom I knew

very well, and Albert Brand and George Morris, of Gosmore, who are both 17. We decided to cycle over to Hertford for a ride. "

was riding along, with Brand near me and Crawley and Morris behind, when I saw com. ing towards us a young man and

girl arm-in-arm

When we drew near to them the man let go of the girl's arm zad stepped across the road. I thought at first he was coming towards me. He did not came to me and I glanced sound and saw him strike a blow at "Crawley.. This blow seemed to strike Craw ley on the shoulder and he fell from the machine.

The man then walked back to the girl and they continued to go along the road together. We lifted Crawley up and laid him on the bank. He was bleeding from the back of the head and Passing ano- was unconscious

torists lent us a rug to lay hin on, and went into Hertford to SuLamon the ambulance:

We did not go straight after the man and the girl because we were busy looking after Crawley and I was a Little frightened of the man. I saw the couple turp down a lane leading from the road, and when a keeper came. "along I told him. We went down another lane which led to the end of the lane down which they went, but we did not see them.

I never heard the man who struck Crawly say a word. H simply stepped across the road, hit him, and stepped back again to the girl. He was about 20 and bit. 8in. or bit. 9in.in height, and he wore a blue-grey single-breasted mit and cap of the same colour. The girl, who was about 18, wore a brown coat and light-coloured stockings,

I had never seen him before. We had not made any remarks or done anything to: annay, him.

Workmates Questioned. Crawicy was employed at an iron foundry at Welwyn Garden City, and the police have visited the place and questioned, his fel- low-workers. The police think that the man. described by the boys must live in the neighbourhood,
