Master And Pilot: Who Is Responsible?

The Nautical Magazine, referring to the time-worn question master 2. pilot, which has come into the limelight again through the con- ference of the United Kingdom Pilots' Association, states:

The position to our mind is this: When a ship is in charge of compulsory pilot it is he who should be held responsible for any accident arising through a false movement or wrongfub navigation. Whilst the masten is still in com: mand of the ship, he is not respon- sible for the navigation. If in his opinion the pilot giver a wrong order, it is open to the captain to suggest as much, but if he de liberately interferes and, an ac- cident follows, then the master

must be held to blame. It is a queer situation, yet we do not consider it reasonable that if n accident occurs to a ship whilst the pilot is on board the master should lose the gratuity of safe navigation
