The new rudder enables the ship to be turned round in a radius of 200-it in just one and a half aninutes without the s aid of a rud. der engine. The rudder was said to be originally a British iden taken up by the Germans. It is named after Herr Flettner, once a school teacher at Frankfurt. The rudder will mean a saving of 400 tons of coal a year, it was said. Each of the new steamers will have accom- modation for 2,233 passengers. The steamers will burn less coal than the eld--paddle steamers and will save the ratepayers £1,000 a year.
