LIVELY INCIDENT AFTER CHURCH SERVICE.

In broad daylight yesterday another sensational escape from the Victoria Gaol was auccessfully effected by fuir Chinese convicts. How the convicts climbed the wall is still a mystery.

We learned from an unofficial source that a gang of prisoners was attending Church Service in an open yard on the South-east portion of the gaol at about 4.45 or 3 p.m. The service listed about

Some interesting facts were brought to light at the Central Magistracy yesterday when the Chinese steward of the ss. Paul Beaw, and seven others who were on board without permission, were charged before Mr. R. E. Lindsell with holding an illegal meeting.

It was stated that there is an organization in Hong Kong known as the Canton, Hong Kong, Swatow, and Kongmoon Seamen's Cuion. This Union, although net recognised, has already shown some sign of activity and is alleged to have interfered in the trouble between the steward and the captain of the Paul Henu. That this Union has some influence was clear from the statement made by Mr. Lindsell that the owners of the l'aul Beay had apparently

on the master of the vessel by tacitly gone back" allowing the gathering on board. A representative of the owners, called as a witness yesterday, was reluctant to disclose what had actually transpired although Mr. Lindsell threatened to send him to gno).

The steward was charged with absenting himself from duty with out permission and with participat ing in an unauthorised meeting on board. The seven other defendants were charged with being on board without permission and also with holding an unauthorised meeting.

The days of Bolshevism are now over in Canton and the doctrines of the Soviet are unpopular. It is a crime for labour unions to adopt the red flag as their standard. La the days when M. Boredir. Other Escapes 'Recalled. The present affair, although a held one in that it took place in daylight, does not compare with the sensational incident when four prisoners broke gaol in the early part of 1820. In that hold bid for liberty a European warder named Speed and an Indian wurder were nurdered.

Following this was the attempt -of-two-long-term prisoners who tried to dig a tunnel in their cells leading to the yard. They had been working on it for some, time until one day Warder Wast heard them arrowing and upset their plans,

Another similar incident took
