TWO FATAL ACCIDENTS AT HAPPY VALLEY.
THREE COOLIES KILLED IN A LANDSLIDE AT THE CEMETERY.
BAMBOO HAT SAVES WOMAN'S LIFE.
WORK OF THE FIRE BRIGADE AND POLICE.
Four Chinese lives were lost in the Happy Valley sector yesterday afternoon in two accidents within a few hours of each other.
In the earlier incident, a Chinese was knocked down by a trampcar, and injured. In spite of very efficient first aid by a member of the St. John Ambulance Brigade pending the arrival of an ambulance, the man died on the way to hospital..
The later incident took a sudden toll of three lives. The victims were engaged in excavation work at the Moham medan Cemetery at the time when they were, without warning, buried in a landslide.
Officers of the Central Fire Brigade, the Police, and the Sanitary Department, did extremely good work ja an endeavour to rescue the unfortunate victims, but to no purpose.
A fourth would-be victim of the disaster, a coolie woman, had an astonishingly fortunate escape, her bamboo hat, being the means of saving her life.
