THE PORT OF LONDON.
REPORT IN LAST YEAR'S TRADE.
MANY IMPROVEMENTS IN
* HANDY
The
remarkable fact emerges | from the annual report of the Port of London Authority that during -1920 the todtage of vessels entering and leaving the port totalled 49,878,173 tona, which exceeds the next highest total, that for 1925, 63 2,213,188 tens states the Financial Nets.
•
The report deals with the year ended March 31st last, and states that during that period 38,537,089 tons of cargo paid river tonnage dues, an increase of 886,069 tons on the previous 12 months. There was as increase of 3,123,213 tons in the foreign and a decrease of 2,438,133 tons in the coastwise trades. “
The revenue totalled £6,401,793 and the expendituro £1.008,210, leaving a balance of £1,463.313. In terest and sinking fund charges ac- counted for £1,248,917, which' left
a surplus for the year of £157,296. The balance brought forward was £317,340, making a total of 2014,633 in hand.
Improvements.
Many improvement works are at present in hand the progress of which has been retarded by the general strike and the coal, stop- page. These improvements include the construction of a drydock sad of a landing stage at Tilbury, and the provision of further accomme dation for the, chilled ment trade at the Royal Victoria and Albert Docks..
During the year 1,683,709 cubi yards of material were removed from the river to maintain and deepen the channels, while 1,299,599 cubic yards of mud were removed from the docks.
Forty-eight vessels were removed from the river by the wreck raising! plant, these being three steamers and 45 sailing vessels and barges.
mensores undertaken to meet the general strike are given at length.
Lieut-Colonel J. T. C. Moore. Brabazon, M.P., at that time Par- liamentary Secretary to the Minis try of Transport, was appointed Civil Commissioner of the Port of London on May 6th, relinquishing his duties on May 16th, the day be fore the dock workers · resized. work.
The Authority appreciate very highly the able manner, in which Colonel Moore-Brabazon and his staff carried on their work," states the report.
